Okay,
I know these are stupid questions. I've always only been a one dog
owner so this is new to me. We've got some possible prospects for a
"brother" for Gracie this Spring - one may be with the same breeder as
Gracie. I really liked her breeder. Gracie's father was in Westminster
and she has has other champions. In fact, Gracie's brother is now going
for his championship.

Gracie gets a long with other dogs fine, I think. She loves to play and is still very puppyish. She is
protective over my husband so that worries me a bit. She will not let
me love on him without getting in the middle. She has even lunged at me
(I know, this has got to stop! But, I think it was more playing).
Gracie likes to play rough with my husband and sometimes nips him. I
worry about her doing this to her brother or her brother learning from
him.

My questions are:
1) Crating - obviously, they should have their "own" crates. Would it be okay for the crates to be
next to each other or a part?

2) Feeding - How do you feed them? Together or Separately?

3) Attention - How to split your attention between 2 dogs? Will there be jealousy?

4) Toys - Every toy is Gracie's!

5) Will puppy learn Gracie's "bad" habits?

6) Will there be fighting?

7) Last but not least, any suggestions for names that begin with a "D" for a boy?

I think we have lost our minds! I think it would be good to do this
sooner or later before Gracie gets too old. She is very spoiled and
very strong-willed now. We're glutton for punishment!

Thanks for the input!

We just added a 2nd corgi, a 2 1/2 year old female to our 8 year old male. I have the crates close but not right next to each other. I feed them apart but at the same time. Yes, they will be jealous!!! I just give them both my attention, I try to be sure my older dog doesn't feel left out, I will walk them by themselves and go to bed with just one at at time and switch off with either one. I got Sally toys that are hers, but Bucher thinks everything is his, they don't fight about it but I kind of let them work it out. Your on your own with the D names, I had a heck of a time agreeing with my husband on names, he wanted something to do with fishing for our girl...Not! It's a lot of work, but we think it is So Worth It!!

Dara,
My great grandparents (3 of 4 sets) came to the US from Wales. When we got our pem Welsh corgi, I searched on line for Welsh names. We settled on "Morna" which means "dearly loved". I thought that was so appropriate b/c she's a sweet little girl, and we do love her. If you are interested in choosing a Welsh name for your new little boy, do a search on google for "names male Welsh". You might have to look at a couple of sites b/c some that come up don't have many names listed. Good luck.. will be looking for news of the arrival of your new Pem.

I have 3 corgis (2 cardis and a pem) and have had up to 6 at one time for the last 15 years. My experience has been this: I feed them at the same time, but in different areas of the same room and I've never had a problem. Watch to see that one doesn't sneak food from the other. Jealously has reared up only with a puppy in the first year or so, when the puppy is vying for attention in an inappropriate way - and he soon learns not to do it. My problem is during walks. I noticed that Lynne (below) walks them separately. I wish I had the energy and the time to do that! But, I don't, and that's where I have difficulty. One is 9 months, one is 3 1/2 and one is 13 - they all have different agendas on their walk. One of my dogs is a little fear-aggressive when he's leashed and sees strange dogs in his neighborhood. The other two, not normally aggressive, join in. It's not a pretty sight.

They all sleep where they want - those who can "get" on the bed - get to sleep there. Chews - they usually work that out, but with little ones, be vigilant at first - and remove the chew if anyone of them gets "snarky" with it. Fora D name - how about "Dylan"? Very good Welsh name.
Hi Dara & Gracie,
#1 I have always had my dogs next to the other (they soon know which one is their's) I also leave the doors open (when I'm home) as there are times that they like to go in & take a nap. At bedtime or when I go out I tell them to "kennel" & close the door, each time I give a half a treat & tell them they are "good babies) . I wouldn't say theu are spoiled. : )

#2. I have always feed in the crate ( they always try to beat each other in so they will be the first to get it.)

#3. I always call their name when we have loving time like" Jimmy I love you your such a good boy" then I look at Gemma & say mommie loves Gemma too. Good girl Gemma" they understand.

4# they will always steal the toys & bones just let them try to work it out, but watch Gracie she will probably be the one to start it & most times the male will let them be the boss. Gracie like my Cheyenne there were times I had to correct her when she would try to hurt Devon.

5# He might try but it may not be his nature.

#6. Bet from what you say about her she will try.

#7 What a question LOL! I love the name Devon. I named shadow's first son Devon & use Devon as my kennel name.

Like Lynne said it's worth it!

Check out the Nothing in Life is Free program (google it) you should put a stop to Gracie thinking she owns your hubby and all the toys. We added our second corgi when Sparty was 1 !/2 and he loved her right off. As the second gets to be around 9 months to 1 1/2 there may be some issues (the younger may start to challenge whose in charge). Hopefully your breeder will have advice on the best matched puppy to your dog. It is better to match the second dog with your dog than to pick the one you think is cutest. I feed mine in the same room, in the same order, but not right next to each other. I then pick up the bowls after so there is no confusion about whose is whose. we have three dogs and two cats so I frequently have to pet two at a time. It seems to work out but I would never allow one to get snarky with the other while sharing. We have plenty of toys but they all want the same one I just do not allow taking from each other. If they do that I get the toy. It is a lot more fun with multiples but you do need to be in charge, I recommend Obedience training. Dudley is a cute corgi name. Enjoy!
I never had multiple dogs until we had Bella for a month and I kept saying "she needs a friend" to my husband and Bodde (bOHdee) came home with us. Then came Bacio (bAH-tchOH), Bedde (bEEdEE), Breckin and Blizzard. they are all within a year and a half of each other. and it is never a dull moment for us. We love it!
I hope my answers help you.
1) Crating - obviously, they should have their "own" crates. Would it be okay for the crates to be
next to each other or a part?
We have 6 corgwyn, yes 6! 4 boys and two girls. We have puppy "high rises" two are stacked on each other. They are all in the same room when crated.

2) Feeding - How do you feed them? Together or Separately?
We kennel feed our pack and it has always been that way for us. It works great.

3) Attention - How to split your attention between 2 dogs? Will there be jealousy?
Some of our boys don't get along with each other so we have a rotation and everyone gets their "out" time.
There might be jealousy. Our youngest boy, Breckin, was possessing me and we stopped that quickly by "whispering" him away when he tried to hone in on the attention someone else was getting. Now he behaves very well and we can love on other dogs in front of him. Don't let Gracie get away with possessing your husband at all.

4) Toys - Every toy is Gracie's!
Our littlest is Bedde (BEEdee) and all toys belong to her but we don't let anyone possess any toy. Sometimes she distracts the boys chewing on a bone and goes over very quietly and gently takes the bone from him. The boys never fight back they just look dumfounded that she would dare take their bone.
We use nylabones and Galileo bones for our pack and always have. Stuffed ones and rope toys were never a good option for us.

5) Will puppy learn Gracie's "bad" habits? If you don't allow her to get away with it then the new dog will follow your lead

6) Will there be fighting?
Our boys never fight with our girls only with other boys. For this breed it is my understanding that the girls are the alpha dogs and the boys are the teddybears. I have found this to be true. Our boys are lovers for sure.

7) Last but not least, any suggestions for names that begin with a "D" for a boy?
I did searching for our dogs (they all start with a B, That's how I found Breckin (it means freckled in Gaelic and he has a spotted nose).

Hope this is a good start for you

Hi Dara,

!. I have always had my crates next to or on top of (when I had more then two.) At this time Jimmy & Gemma are next to each other. 2. Corgis are chow hounds so, I have always feed in crates. Will there be jealousy? 3.

Probably I've always loved on both together saying"Jimmy is a good boy & Gemma a good girl they know what I mean. 4. She will have to learn to share & that's not easy for corgis especially the bitches. I know there are some exceptions, but usually the bitches are the boss. 5. He could might but, scold him, don't forget her she needs to know there are limits also.    6. There might be, if it's a little growel let them work it out if it's more then that tell them to kennel (if that's the word you use) & tell them that's bad (don't forget to close & lock the door) & let them cool off. 7. Well since I love the name Devon & named my kennel that & one of my first cardis, Devon I bet it tells you something. ; ) Good Luck!!!!
