Traveling with your dogs.
Has anyone heard of this?
Warning to all show people and people traveling through the states of Georgia, North Carolina and S Carolina. The above states will confiscate your dogs if traveling through them and they stop you and you can't show proof of vaccination for rabies.
They stopped people returning from the Perry shows and took their dogs, they called in their lawyer and the dogs were returned but they were fined $600 for not having paperwork with them.

I hadn't heard that, but we're going to W Virginia this summer, I'll make sure we bring along paperwork just in case. We may not need it, but I'd really hate to learn that the hard way!

well, in my opinion, the whole incident was a little blown out of proportion by motivated party. It really only concern show breeders and they wanted the pet owners to jump on board on their agendas. What happen was the breeder was driving with their dogs in cages in the back of a pick up truck, the local police saw them and wanted to make sure they were breeders and not dog thief (dog show in town), however since they didn't have docs with them, that's why they got in trouble. Plus what the circulating email didn't tell you was that the breeder in question and her daughter was not smart enough to remain inside the truck during the police pullover, one of them got out of the truck to have a smoke without informing the officer (big mistake) so when you have hot headed inexperience people dealing with local police pulling ranks = email circulation.
moral of the story is:
1. Always travel with docs of your dog in the glove box, make it a habit to bring rabies record, it's very handy. Most dog resort or boarding facilities will ask for it. In case your dog bit someone at the dog park, you have the docs to show.
2. When you are visiting a new town, obey the local law, having dogs in the back of a truck is not legal in a lot of places.
3. When you do get pulled over by a cop, be calm and respectful, don't get out of the car unless you're told to do so, cops are afraid to get shot just as much as you do, they are putting their lives on the line at work. Don't act like an idiot and talk like an uninformed lawyer, good cops do exist, it could be just your backlights are out. Don't act guilty and pull a fit, everything can be handle properly at the court.
4. Don't believe everything you read on the internet, go straight to the source, check the story on both sides, many records are public info, digg a little deeper and you'll separate the BS and emotions from the truth.

Thanks Sam....as a resident of North Carolina I have never heard of this. But I do carry a photocopy of the boys rabies certificate in my purse. Never had to pull it out but atleast it is there.

Rabies vaccination papers are also required for dogs visiting national parks, which is why a copy of Edison's lives in our glove box.

Wow! I guess we've been very lucky. We've travelled with our dogs all over the country staying either in hotels or taking our 5th wheel & have never heard mention of needing any kind of paperwork for the dogs. It never even occurred to us! I feel kinda stupid for not having thought of it. Should we just carry a rabies cert. when we travel or the entire vaccination record? What about ownership papers? I the rabies tag on their collar enough?

When I travel with the dogs, I always take their complete medical records with me. They each have a 3 ring binder and I just punch the paperwork from the vet and put it in the binder. When Rocky was so sick 2 years ago away from home, it saved the vet having to get his shot records from our local vet. I just put the binders in a canvas tote bag and it gets packed with the rest of the stuff. Doesn't take up much room and I have everything I need. Their registration papers are also in there. We also got picture IDs from Home Alone (microchip) that we each have in our wallets. This way we have a good current picture of them with us. May be overkill but it might be important sometime.
