So Murphy hasn't had the easiest puppyhood ever.  First it was fleas, then tapeworms, then conjunctivitis & ringworm, rounding the list out with coccidia. Now that we've gotten all THAT squared away we are left with a healthy pup with extremely stinky breath. Why would a puppy would exhibit poop mouth? And no - he isn't eating any.  :- D

What he's actually eating is Natural Ultramix puppy food.  I've never used the brand before - and probably won't again (LOTS of puppy poo) - but it got 4 stars from Dogfoodanalysis and I had a coupon that got me two free cans of adult wet food with the purchase of 6 pounds or more of any variety of dry food.  With Killian and the pup coming on board thought it was a win/win...

Anyway - back to the stink breath... thoughts?

I was worried about that stinky breath too when I first brought Mochi home, but I took her to the vet 3 days after and they told me it was completely normal to have stinky puppy breath. She informed me that there is something going on inside their digestive system as puppies, and that it will cause their breath to be ultra smelly. I don't think that you have anything to worry about, but you could always ask your vet their thoughts on it as well.

I kept giving Mochi baths the first few days she was home because we got her from a lady who lived on a farm, and I was certain that I just hadn't gotten that bard yard stink off of her...when all the while it was just her puppy breath hehehe :) Good luck with your puppy -- he is super cute! :)
Thanks Michelle! That makes me feel a whole lot better - I'm glad that it's normal and will clear up on its own. Although now I'm wondering what it is that is going on in his digestive system that makes the breath so horrendous! Maybe it's related to the dry food from milk diet transition? Hmmm...
You're welcome! Mochi's breath has gotten much better since we brought her home so, I'm sure his will clear up soon :) I tried to find an article that explained it in more detail, but couldn't seem to find anything about their digestive system changing and making their breath stinky...it was more on them eating things they shouldn't and that wasn't the problem for either of us!
Hm...I never have problems with stinky puppy breath. Actually, I like how my pup's breath smells. It kinda smells like cereal lol. Anyways, I guess it helps that I try to keep her teeth as clean as possible. I give her a lot of dental chews to reduce tartar buildup. I also give her doggy mints once a day and I brush her teeth every so often. I'm sure a good tooth brushing will clear up some of that smelliness if it bothers you a lot. Good luck!
All the chews and brushing in the world didn't seem to help Mochi... I tried everything and, it just took time for the smell to wear off and thankfully it's much better now. I think puppy breath is one of those things people either love or hate because my friend absolutely loved her puppy breath while I thought it was foul!
I thought the same thing Kieu but we've tried brushing the little guys teeth twice in the last 3 days and still no luck. I'm also not convinced every pup has bad breath and its a "you like it or don't" scenario but that it varies from pup to pup... when Killian was a wee little guy his breath kinda smelled like cheerios. At this point I'm thinking either the little guy:

A. Has the digestion changes Michelle talks about above.
B. Has a severe case of halitosis!

I'm hoping for case A 'cause at least that will go away. :-D!!
You could try feeding him a spoonful of plain yogurt a day because it has digestive enzymes in it. About two weeks after we started giving Mochi a spoonful a day her bad breath abated...not sure if it's related or not, but definitely doesn't hurt to try!
