Corgis and chewing habits
Does anyone have a corgi who they cannot give stuffed animals to because they will rip it apart and eat it? Just a very hard chewer in general? Our corgi is a very harsh chewer, they only toys he hasnt totally destroyed is the Kong puppy one where the treat goes in. Although we did give him the Kong dental toy and he destroyed that too, within minutes!!!

Arlette, I bought Lance the busy buddy where you can stick food in it on either side, he loves it! Keeps him busy for awhile. He even tries bouncing it on the ground to get the food to pop out because he used to do that to his Kong when we stuffed ice in it! Thanks for the idea

I so agree busy buddy toys are the competition for kong, they are great.

I have the same problem with mine. Gonzo loves to tear open his stuffed toys and pull all the stuffing out. I try to sew them up the first time or two, but after that I just throw them away. I bought one for him about two weeks ago and it's already been trashed!
He goes through nylabones very quickly also. I bought him the Galileo, it's supposed to be for super strong chewers, and he's still made considerable progress on one of the ends. I found that the "BBQ" nylabones work well though - corn cob shaped, ribs shaped. The ribs are softer but he's had them for a few weeks now. We still have the corn cob that we bought him MONTHS ago.
We also have to be careful with tennis balls. I finally bought REAL tennis balls, instead of the petstore kind, and he doesn't even really like them. But the petstore kinds he just takes into his house when we're not looking and tears them up.
He does still have his Kong balls though! He likes getting inside them too much to ruin them.
I also saw a lot of toys with no stuffing in them. They were basically just fabric with squeakers sewn into them, but very long. I didn't buy them because Gonzo will chew through to get to the sqeaker, and they reminded me too much of dead animal skins, but you could give them a try! hehe

Triley destroys almost all his toys - he even bites off small pieces of his rubber toys and slowly wears them down. We've found that Kong products are the most durable, as are items made out of similar material. I got Triley something very similar to one of these (http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751032) at our local CVS (of all places) and he loves, loves, loves it. I think he likes it because he can get a loose grip on it with his mouth, but he can't hold it for long (it is too big to fit in his mouth and the links are too small for him to grip one) so it falls out and he thinks it is "getting away!" It has lasted almost two months, which is shocking. I would just try various different toys made of durable material and see which ones your pup likes and also last the longest... Good luck!

Tiki pretty much has chewed up every toy we ever gave her...including those that are supposedly durable...and she, like others who have posted, loves to disembowel every toy. So, we stopped with the soft toys...although she does like the tire-biter toys as they are durable...as well as the non-edible rubber greenies (http://www.dog.com/item/greenies-smart-chew-for-soft-chewers-jumbo/). Tiki pretty much now likes rawhide chews...they seem to last the longest and allow her to enter what we call "Chewvana"

Although my corgi is a very harsh chewer I actually did find some toys he could not destroy from planetdog.com, they rate their toys called the chewometer. I found the football is good for harsh chewers well at least for lance, it is bouncy so they cant really chew it. He has a baseball from there also that he cant chew. I tried getting the dice for him but he ripped those up in no time. I thought they would be too big for him, but i guess not. The other toys he has ripped apart from there are the christmas bulbs and the rubber tennis balls. The football and baseball and the woof ball he has had for about 1 1/2 now and still going strong, phew!!!

well, my pup cant have stuffed toys either because he will eat it...but pig ears and the bully sticks seemed to really help. i dont know how fast your dogs will go through them but my dog was really picky about his toys and would quickly lose interest in anything that wasnt fluffy so the nylabones and kongs were useless unless it had treats. the twisted bully sticks are denser so they might put up a better fight...and be edible.

Hi there,
I came across this discussion while searching about the same problem for my dog. I would be happy to give my dog stuffed toys and let him rip them to shreds, BUT he EATS the stuffing, eats rope off rope toys, and has EVEN eaten parts of his tougher rubber toys (like those Tire toys) which thankfully he was able to pass out his system. I was wondering if any toys you found worked particularly well for you since you posted this? His constant eating of things he shouldn't make me paranoid about intestinal blockages. Since he eats his toys I am less prone to leaving them out with him which I think leads to him finding other "makeshift" toys, like my entertainment unit, to chew on.
Anyway, so far what I do is give him hooves or huge raw hides to chew on, and that seems to be the more attractive choice to him and will prevent him from chewing other stuff. I would, however, love to give him his bed back, but there are only so many times I want to re-stuff and re-sew that thing :p
