Over the last week or so Gryffin, my tan and white, has been very itchy. Not really sure why but for South Florida we've had an unusually cold streak for about a week. Gryffin been scratching all over basically since I gave him a bath coincidently about a week ago. Well anyway, I started to give him some fish oil, about 2000mg a day, hoping that it would help him with the itching. Sorry to say he's still scratching but I was wondering if there is such a thing as too much? (By the way his BM's don't seem to be affected!)
Thank for any advice you all may have!

Yes, supplements safety is not "regulated by the FDA", the FDA don't step in until something bad happens. Make sure you get it from a reputable source for purity and quality control. Too much fish oil can lead to cancer. Fish oil can also interact with some medication and generally not good for diabetics dogs, check with your vet and see if Gryffin is on any Rx that could affect by fish oil. Too much fish oil can thin Gryffin's blood and inhibit his ability to stop bleeding.

Could it be a reaction to the shampoo you used at his bath? Also, do you do flea control year round? We usually don't bother in the fall/winter (we're in San Diego), but Sidney started itching about a month ago. I checked him a couple times, saw no fleas. Third check and Voila! Fleas! I gave him his Comfortis and now he's itch-free.
We've found with any weather change, the fur-kids itch. Seems that the turning on of the household heater is a big culprit. We do put a couple of fish oil caps in each of their food bowls. Their skin and coats look wonderful. But, agreed on not over-doing it. I've heard good things about the Wild Alaskan Salmon oil from GNC, but we take the cheap route and just get the regular caps from Wal-Mart.
As for bathing, we use oatmeal shampoo and put a couple of drops of tea tree oil in it. Just make sure you rinse well. Nothing will get the kids itching worse than a shampoo not fully rinsed. On occasion, I'll also make a spray using tea trea oil and spray their coats, working the oil into their skin. Gives them a little extra help with the itching.
What kind of shampoo did you use? Since it started right after the bath, I'd get an oatmeal shampoo made for dogs and give him another bath and see if that helps. My old dog used to get horrible allergies due to some of the different pet shampoos out there (including a few of those prescribed by my vet). We found that oatmeal shampoo got rid of the itching. Just make sure to rinse REALLY well, its so hard to get all the soap out of those double coats!
