How did you end up with a corgi? Tell us your story!

My wife and I were newly weds, we were not ready for babies so we decided to take on a puppy instead.

At that time in our life, we were living in a 2000 sqft condo, space was limited and so we knew we wanted something small to medium size. We have thought about other dog breeds like border collie, beagle & sheltie. We eliminated them because of the following reasons:

border collie - requires a lot of exercise and we were living in a condo.
beagle - the breed seems to be quite stubborn and can be a real howler.
sheltie - great size and very similar to corgi, but the hair can be a lot of work.

So why did we pick corgi? well, we read alot about the breed, it seems like corgis are very smart, motivated by food, loyal and good with kids. It fit right into our requirements.

So what else am I happy about my dogs? I like that they're not "common". I'm surprised that there are many people who don't know about them and constantly ask if they're pure bred :) I also like the fact that my dogs can handle themselves with the bigger dogs in the dog park. Corgis are very brave and have great stamina to run and herd cattles & sheeps for 45mins nonstop.

How about you? How did you end up with a corgi? why don't you share with us?

I got my first corgi over 18 years ago. I had worked for the Humane Society when I was younger; and as a result, I swore I'd never buy a pet store puppy.
Well, that changed. When I was in the mall, I often stopped at the pet store just to play with the pups. I was never tempted to take any home. It was just a pleasant distraction.
One day they had a corgi pup in the pen outside the store. She was adorable (I still believe they are the cutest puppies of any breed). I tried to play with her; she was friendly but uninterested. Then the salesgirl saw me. She came right out; and when she did, the dog lit up like the queen of the world had just shown up. Well, the salesgirl told me about corgis being very loyal to their "pack leader" and that just really appealed to me. I wanted a dog that thought I was the queen of the world! Since I wasn't looking for a dog, I still went home and let the idea simmer for about 2 weeks. When I went back the corgi pup was still there. I took her home and she was with me for almost 18 years, until I lost her last August.
Interestingly, after I'd had her for several years, I came across a "what dog is right for you" questionnaire on the internet. I answered the questions about lifestyle and personality and such, and, lo and behold, the right dog for me was.....a corgi!
Only one aspect of having a corgi was a disappointment. After having Coyote for several months, I came across another corgi owner in the park (corgis weren't that common where I lived at the time), and excitedly told her about all the things I liked about my amazing little dog and how special she was: so smart, eager to please, big-dog mentality, fearless, even how cute she was when she wiggled her butt. That was when I learned, to my great surprise, that her "special" traits were all traits of the breed! Duh!
My ex boyfriend got me hooked on corgis after talking about the one his grandmother had when he was a kid. He made me watch Cowboy Bebop too. I hadn't had a dog since I was 10, and even then it had been a bad experience so I wasn't too fond of dogs. When my ex and I moved out on our own he kept talking about how awesome it would be to get a corgi and about how awesome the breed was. I did research on them and fell in love with the breed. Well, we broke up about four months after we moved and I had to move out . But after that I was addicted to corgis. (I pretty much molested everyone that I saw with a corgi. I asked them all kinds of questions and loved on their dogs.)

I moved out on my own again and considered getting a dog because my previous roommates had paid the pet deposit and when they moved out the apt owners couldn't refund it, so it stayed paid. My current boyfriend and I are living alone and he is often at work so I was lonely. I looked at puppies online at puppyfind.com seeing all of the corgi puppies and falling in love. At first I was going to get a blue merle Cardi with dual colored eyes (this is a weakness for me) but she was $1000 not including shipping! Then I saw Zephyr! She had spots on her ears and I fell in love. And she was only $400 including shipping. The nice breeder let me get bring the price down to $300 because I could drive down to pick her up.

I told my mom about it and she's like, "I'll get it for you for your birthday (which wasn't for 3 months), but you have to bring it out to see your grandparents." So I drove 5 hours down to Oregon and got my very own corgi!
Tim (my husband) and I bought Oliver after months of debating on what kind of dog to get. We looked at dog books of all the breeds - my favorite was the corgi (gotta love the little legs and the bunny butt!) and his was the king charles spaniel. I wasn't too much of a fan of the spaniel, so I kept pushing for the corgi. I showed hi a bunch of pictures, and he warmed up to it. When we arrived from our honeymoon, we went out to dinner with some friends, who then told us that they became parents of two yorkies. That pushed us to make the dog purchase a reality - the next day, I was online looking for breeders. I found one in Iowa that had 3 left, 2 girls and 1 boy. I was set on the boy, and told her I had intentions of coming to get it on the weekend - but she told me that they might be gone by the weekend. So the NEXT DAY, I drove Tim to work, and the breeder told me in the morning that one of the female dogs had been sold. I spent all morning shopping for all the necessary supplies. Lunch time came around, and I picked Tim up and we started the drive to Iowa. When we arrived, the other girl was already sold as well. Oliver was the only one left! We swooped in and drove him home...and the rest is history.
hahaha thats funny cuz i had to convince pupdad about corgis too (man wanted big dog! wrar!) :) i finally got him to go out to the breeder to "look" at the puppies but bring out check books "just in case"

well needless to say a little while later, he was holding Roxi grinning like an idiot over at me made me know he was sold lol

curse us and plotting against those men! ;)
lol! I love Cowboy Bebop! Its one of those rare shows/movies I can watch over and over and over again.

There's a reason why they call her a data dog ;) one of the writers had to have owned/loved the breed. The expressions in the anime are just right on!
Josh had a sheltie that he adored as a boy but who unfortunately died a few years ago. We both think corgis are adorable, plus we are right now living in an apartment (but soon to be in a house!) so their small size was a plus. Josh of course wanted the tri-color because it reminded him of his sheltie, and when we visited the breeder the first time and Josh picked out Hunter, Layla also picked me, so we ended up bringing her home too. I also am very active outdoors, I do a lot of hiking and rock climbing, and Josh and I play tennis, so we are really excited to have an active breed to participate in these activities with us.

But my favorite thing about corgis - well Pembrokes - is that since they don't have tails, they shake their whole butts. When I saw that the first time, I was sold. =)
i saw a puppy at work, he was ging to Sea. It was love a first sight. I called the breeder that night only to find out that was her last one. It took me 3 months and countless hours on the computer, but I found my corgi.!!!! My husband and son just shook their heads when I told them I found my baby. The breeder was only a few hours away so it was a nice day trip. My husband said we would go look at the puppies and then decide if we would be able to handle one. Ha...I knew we were coming home with one that day!!! I had my heart set on a male but when the breeder showed us the puppies the first one that came to me was a female....I thought I had died and gone to heaven!!! She was the most adorable thing I had ever seen. I too loved the little bunny butt.....There was no waiting to make a decision...she was going home with us. I have never regretted the decision. Maxine has been a constant joy for us.....well most of us..the cat is still waiting for the furry ball of energy to leave....We've had Max 4 months and I can't remember what it was like without her. I just love my little bunny butt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Years ago I was watching a reality show on Animal Planet called "Emergeny Vets" and there was a whole episode dedicated to this poor breeder who's puppies had eaten something toxic and were having seizures. They were the cutest little puppies - huge ears, short legs and very friendly, even though they were sick, scared and in a dire situation. Well, all of the pups turned out okay and at the end of the episode there was a clip of all of them frolicking in their yard. I kept thinking to myself, "Those were just the cutest dogs ever, I wonder what breed they are!"

Anyway, I'd always grown up with dogs and figured when I graduated from college I would get one too. However, I never had stable employment (only year-long contracts) and then I went to grad school and there just never was a good time (I didn't want to get a dog until I knew I had the resources to take care of it!)! When Curtis and I were about to complete our MAs we decided to move in together and I was insistant that we get an apartment that allowed dogs. Curtis had also grown up with dogs and wanted to get one too, so he agreed that we'd get a pup "someday." We live in a small apartment (with a very small "yard") in a big, busy city, so we knew we had to get a small dog. I started researching breeds under 30 lbs and came accross corgis - the same super cute puppies I'd seen on TV years before! I started sending pictures of corgis to Curtis and researching breeders, but we hadn't been living together for very long and were worried that throwing a puppy into the mix might be too much...

And then Curtis started looking up corgis on YouTube and sending me video after video of cute puppies and silly adult corgis - I knew he was hooked! Corgis became our constant topic of conversation! We knew that we'd both have considerable time off and job flexibility at the end of the summer, so we started searching for a pup that would be ready to go in late July.

We found Triley at a breeder in PA (only a four hour drive away...) and he just melted our hearts. We picked him out in early July and couldn't take him home for another 4 weeks (he was still too young) so we had a month of anxious anticipation! Finally we got to bring him home and he is just the cutest, sweetest thing! He is very friendly and greets everyone like they are is long lost best friend but when all our friends leave he just curls up in my lap and gets all cozy! We've had him for over 8 months now and he is the light of our lives!
My mom had a sable Corgi named Dot (Badger's biological aunt) for a few years when she decided to breed a litter. At the time we had two cats and a mutt named Maggie. My husband had drawn the line--no more pets!

But then I helped my mom welp the litter and immediately fell in love with Badger--the only tri and the runt of the litter! His mother had tried to push two pups out at once and we had to puncture one sac so that the other puppy could be born. We spent about 15 minutes trying to figure out if one of the puppies was face/head first. All of the sudden, I got a glimpse of a pink tongue and we knew which pup was destined to be born!

I was hoping to get Badger for Christmas (I dropped enough hints!), but ended up buying him from my mom. It's a descision I have never regreted. He is great with kids, cats, and other dogs. He is the carbon copy of his biological mom and very similar to his aunt Dot--very vocal, super smart, and bossy!
I have loved corgis for years because of their adorable attributes: big, erect ears, bunny butts, stubby legs....what's not to love?! And now that I have them, I realize what great personalities they have, too. When my first dog passed away last September, after 13 years, I lost a great friend and couldn't imagine getting another dog but it wasn't long before I realized I didn't want to live without a dog and so started the search for a corgi. My husband and I figured if one was good, two would be better so we ended up with a Rufus and a Boo. It hasn't taken long for them to steal our hearts, they are truly our "babies" and we just love them to death!
When I met my husband, I had an enormous cat who was the love of my life. 6 months after we started dating, we added another kitty, a precious grey tortie. We were devoted cat people until we lucked into having a yard. My husband grew up with shelties, and my family'd had a rat terrier mutt, so we both knew we wanted to have dogs once we had a yard. Our first baby is Oliver, a cavalier king charles spaniel who lives up to his breed history of "used as a lap dog." Oliver LOVES other dogs and desperately wanted a buddy. We thought corgis were adorable, and after reading up on the breed decided we'd like one. So we found a nice breeder in Virginia and brought home an 8 week old bundle of spunkiness with foxy ears and a bunny butt. We just love her already, and Oliver is THRILLED with his sister.
When my Dad retired, he started passing time by doing agility with his Aussie and Border Collie. One day he invited me and the grandkids out to watch an event. While we were waiting for his dogs to perform, we became entranced with these adorable short fox-like dogs. My middle child and I fell in love on the spot and found out that they were Welsh Corgis. Every now and then (really rarely, actually) we would spot one at the Pet Store or at the park and there would be a double squeal of delight...from my daughter and I! We just loved everythig about them. When my husband said it was OK to start looking for a companion dog for our lab mix Chester, we started checking the websites of all the local shelters. It was a long, long process. We even drove an hour in rush hour traffic to Downtown San Diego, only to miss a purebred Pembroke by minutes!

Finally we found Bruce, a corgi/something mix. He was about 10-11 years old at the time (2 1/2 years ago) and he has been an awesome dog. We got him as a gift for my daughter, but he bonded to me like glue. He follows me everywhere. Well, after some wheedling, begging and pleading (and showing him video after video on YouTube), my husband finally agreed to let us get a third dog, a young one that would hopefully bond with my daughter, that she could train in agility, since Bruce was way too old for that kind of activity.

We searched for months and just could not find a corgi in San Diego. I started looking in smaller papers we found a listing for 2 corgis in Riverside, about 1 1/2 hours away. They were 5 months old and were used to being indoors and around cats (we have 2). Hubby agreed to make the drive during Christmas break, and boy, he fell for them on the spot! If we had been zoned for four dogs, we would have brought Riley AND SIdney home! Since we could only bring one, we brought Sidney. His breeder did not dock his tail, so we have a rare Pembroke with a tail. It looks so cute, like a little fox.

He's been taking obedience classes and has bonded very well with our daughter. He'll start agility training in the summer when he turns one year old. Sidney has been a dream come true and he attracts so much attention when we are about town. People generally ave 2 reactions: (1) that squeal of delight that my daughter and I would always give whenever we saw a corgi along with "corgi! I love them!" or (2) what kind of dog IS that? followed by amazement as to how great they are.

We are so happy to have Bruce and Sidney and are very glad to say that corgis are the breed for us. Corgi's rock!
