broken toe
Has anyone had their Corgi break a toe? Chester slipped on the ice and looks like his one foots toes are spayed. Dr. thinks its dislocated and will splint it after x-rays. Cant imagine he will tolerate the splint for long. Any common issues or insights on this? Thanks.

Franklin just broke his toe (for the second time) on Friday. Vet thinks it will be splinted for 6 to 8 weeks. She gave me some valium and ace to sedate him, but it makes him a zombie so I likely won't use it much. Its a big pain in the butt, horrible experience, and I can't give you any good words about it. Just grit your teeth, make sure the splint doesn't get wet, and follow all the doctors orders. When he broke a toe the first time about 1 1/2 years ago I didn't keep him quiet enough and it took almost 3 months to heal. So sorry! We will have to have our little corgis recover together! :-)

How did you keep it from getting moist..? Did you use a plastic bag or something? I think hes really going to fight this..weird thing is that he isnt limping and it just resulted in a very splayed toe, spread away from the others. We do have to pick him up going up the stairs. Good luck with Franklin! Sounds like we're in for a tough spring.

Our Vet gave Cane an IV bag to use with a tie. It had to be replaced a couple of times. He learned to get around very well, almost too well actually. He did gain a little weight so you might want to cut back on the food a little.

Update is Chester has a dislocated toe, a splint that covers his entire right foot and it having a heck of a time walking and challenge doing other things! Hard to squat..he and my husband and I are miserable! Any ideas? Its so hard to see him struggle. He finally peed though so thats some progress.

My old corgi Maxx broke his foot and had a lovely green cast on for a while, he managed to get around with it. They will adapt I think.

Thanks..I guess we'll just have to see. I'm worried that Chester is going to gain weight from lack of exercise which isnt going to help his hip dysplasia much!

Oh yes, Cane broke his toe last july while playing fetch in the back yard. He wore a splint for about 8 weeks. The splint had to be redone a few times, as it is very hard to keep the splint on with such short legs. He wasn't allowed to go on walks, no jumping up or down, couldn't get the splint wet etc. It was very difficult, so sometimes I would cheat a little and roll the ball in the house on carpet. I would take him out in the car to the pet store and starbucks just to get him out of the house cause he seemed to get a little depressed. Once the splint was off we had to ease him back into exercise slowly and he was soon as good as new. Aw...I imaging Chester isnt not going to enjoy this one bit..and neither are we, but its has to be done I suppose!

How did you deal with his need for walks? Took him hrs to finally struggle to hobble to a pee pee place. Cant seem to do the rest yet..He doesnt seem sure how he can steady himself enough. How did this work for Cane?
