There have been cases of heartworms diagnosed in every state. This parasite is transmitted by mosquitos. Preventative may be a little pricey, but it can save your pet's life. There are some areas where resistance is emerging, but there are new types of preventative out there. Annual testing should be done for every pet regardless of whether or not they are on preventative. The website for the American Heartworm Association has lots of good information. They update it with current recomendations for prevention and treatment. I'm not sure the name of the site but you can google it. This is very important for dogs and cats.

Thanks Elizabeth for the great comments & suggestions. I've found that purchasing the preventative through our local low cost vaccination clinics, or with prescription from my vet and using online vendors, really saves on the expense of the preventatives. There are different types of preventatives, some also have ingredients for fleas and ticks as an example, so check with your vet to see what's best for your dog.
Yes, you are right, this is really important!!!
And don't forget the heartworm test annually!!!
Thanks for the information.

Thank you for sharing this, I think a lot of pet owners forget about Heartworm prevention and testing.

I work at a vet that also has boarding services, and recently, a new client was angry and couldn't understand why we required that all dogs and cats get heartworm testing and prevention prior to boarding or daycare. He stormed out, but ended up going back to his vet to have his dog tested. The dog actually tested positive! He called us back and thanked us, because his own vet never discussed heartworm prevention with him!

What kind of prevention are you guys using?
