We're looking for a set of wheels for Gwynnie, 20 lbs., Seattle WA.
Anybody nearby?
Hi Everyone, My female fawn colored Corgi, Chompers, suddenly lost use of her back legs yesterday morning. I rushed her to a specialty Vet Hospital with a Neuro Surgeon who informed me that she blew a disc just below her rib cage. Since it is mid-spine and the swelling was very evident in the MRI, he says she has a 50/50 chance of ever walking again after surgery.
We decided to go through with the surgery because she was in extreme pain and we did not want to keep her in that condition loading her with heavy pain relievers for the rest of her life. They also informed me that if surgery was not performed, swelling could persist and move up the spine causing paralysis in the front legs, too.
As of today at 9:00 am; half a day since her surgery, the neuro surgeon informed me that she still has no deep pain reactions but I shouldn't worry too much because 12 hours after surgery with no sense of pain shouldn't be alarming. He did say that if after 2 weeks she still has no movement in her back legs or any pain/feeling, she will most likely never recover from paralysis.
I'm wondering if anyone from this group has had a Corgi that recovered from the spinal surgery after two weeks with no feeling in their hind legs. Also would love advise/tips regarding urinary bladder expression.
Also, I have no idea when I should start considering a cart. Even if she begins to have feeling in her rear legs, should I consider getting a cart for the rehabilitation period? Sorry for all the questions. I'm new to all of this and was completely blind sided by her paralysis yesterday morning. I would just like to be prepared so I can make her as comfortable as possible. Thank you very much for any advice. I truly appreciate it.
Judy, CorgiAid has carts to loan, the application can be found on the CorgiAid website. There is also a wonderful Yahoo, open to members only, wheelcorgis. There is so much information and caring from the members that I would recommend that you join that group. I have been a member for around 2 years or so when Lucky quit walking and had to go onto a cart. Please go to the corgiaid site now, measure Maggie and apply for a loaner cart!! The total cost is $90 while buying a cart runs $350 or more. Bobbie, the cart coordinator is a wealth of information, but so are many other people on the Yahoo group, As far as length of life, corgis live for many years. there was just a posting today of one at 17 1/3 years old, I do not know if she is an IVDD or DM corgi or not. We often hear of 14 year old corgis. My Lucky did have surgery 6 years ago, walked and then stopped 2 years ago - he is 11. I hope some of this helps you. Carol, Lucky and Sonny
My Maggie was just diagnosed with a herniated disk....she began "drunk walking" with her hind legs about 3 weeks ago. Was getting better and then all walking stopped. We are now on the crate rest/medication regime. She is depressed in the crate, and I have this feeling that she will not walk again. The NeuroVet wanted us to have her have surgery, but we cannot afford it. I am now thinking that the wheelchair would be the next best thing for her. I want to see her moving around again, not laying down in a crate all day. I am going to wait about a month and see what happens, then go for the wheelchair. Are they expensive? And, how much of a longer life will she have with the chair? She is only 8. I know that she has more years left in her life.
Comet was one good looking corgi! But...now he is running free with all the others who met him at the bridge. There have been way too many corgis lost to DM. My Sonny is just diagnosed with DM, my Lucky has IVDD. The Lucky never thinks he is invincible on his cart - they just don't think that the cart is not part of them sometimes.
You might think about donating the cart to CorgiAid. CorgiAid loans carts out for a $50 deposit and $30 ship fee. Lucky has had one of their carts for two years and Sonny has one coming. They have you measure your corgi and then they send a cart that best matches your dog. Sonny is large so we were lucky they found one!
I know that you must miss your Comet so very much. I cannot stop looking at him!

Hello there.
I just wanted to share with you that my husband and I lost our "Comet" in Dec. 2011. Comet had Degenerative Myelopathy.
He lost the use of his left rear leg. With the cart, he was able to get around just fine.
Comet was so determined that he had attempted to go up the stairs a few times.
Our vet suggested that we order the cart from
http://www.k9carts.com/dog-wheelchair
We still have the cart that Comet used. If anyone needs a cart, we would be willing to help them out.
Also, please let us know if you need advice.
Thanks for having a place for Hamlet and I to find out more about becoming mobile again. We are waiting for his wheelchair to arrive. We will include pics soon.
Hello all, i just joined. My Nicky had back surgery yesterday, IVDD. I am looking for a corgi cart. Can anyone offer any info on where to get one.
