Is there any kind of device that kicks on at 5:30 every morning? If it's on the dot, there could be some kind of a sound that only dogs can hear that makes him howl.
Are you sure he's asleep? Dog's do sometimes twitch, make running movements, and vocalize in their sleep. There is some debate as to whether dogs actually dream, but it sure seems a likely explanation to me.
I agree, if he is sleeping maybe he's just chasing something in his dream! Kirby runs and looks like he's eating something in his sleep. He doesn't make a whole lot of noise but everyone once and a while he does yelp or whine. I always have to go check and make sure he's just "dreaming", or asleep.
Zeppelin does this occasionally. The first time he did it, it was about 3am, and we were sound asleep and scared the HELL out of us! We've noted that he's done it maybe a dozen times, overall, and always in his sleep. He's never howled while he's awake, as far as we know. Since it's been rather rare, we don't worry about it. I know I'm not much help, but I did want to say that there is at least one other Corgi who howls in his sleep!
thanks everyone for your comments there are no devices around that we know that could cause his howling. and he is always fast asleep sometime we have to wake him up to stop him howling on other occasions he wakes himself up.
