A humping problem...

I recently got a new dog and he is sweet as can be, however he seems fixated on my 12 year old Boxer mix. She is not spayed, and he is neutered. We got Sissy (Boxer) when she was around 2 years old, and sometime before that she had had a litter of puppies...so now her breasts sag. Loki has a near obsession with licking her breasts especially but also her bum, mouth, and eyes. After he is finished with the licking he will try to hump her. Sissy is clearly uncomfortable and she doesn't let him, but you can tell he annoys her and it is annoying to me as well. I want to stop the problem before she snaps because she is about 67lbs...and Loki is 16lbs soaking wet. Should I intervene?

P.S. He never actually mounts her either, he is usually just humping air...not sure whether or not that is important.

The best thing for her to do is correct him, so he stops being obnoxious. It's very common for males, especially small-breed neutered males, to do this.

However, a female who has not been spayed, by her age, has a pretty severe infection risk, and pyometra can make some males think the girl is back in heat. When was her last heat cycle? Have you noticed any discharge? She's very elderly now to be spayed, but if she's strong enough to endure it I would seriously consider it because every heat cycle is risky for her at this point.

We had a problem when we brought in our female Corgi with her obsessively humping my male when he'd try to play. Even though he would correct her, she would persist, so at the advice of the breeder we got her from, we stepped in. I tried leaving a leash on her for correction, but she won't tolerate a leash dragging behind her (tries to get it off) and so I resorted to using her scruff to drag her off him and give a stern "NO!" It only took about two days of consistent intervention to stop her.

Ideally you let the dogs work it out themselves, but at 12 she may not have the mojo to give an energetic young male the correction he needs. So I would see if she finally gives him a warning that means enough to him to back him off, but if she does not then by all means I would stop her.

By the way, since we stopped Maddie from humping Jack, their relationship has improved tremendously and they are now great friends.

Joanna's questions about health issues are also very important, but my neutered Jack had never met many intact females and when he first did, he would try to mount an intact female even if she was not in heat. He just found it oh-so-fascinating. Since he was very well-socialized with dogs he would stop if the female corrected him, but an intact female who is not even in heat can be very enticing to a male who is not used to being around them. I did some research and found that neutering only stops sexual behavior in about 60% of male dogs, so it's not fool-proof.

Whoops, meant to say "I would stop him", not "her". Sorry for the confusion!

Think of it like if you had kids (even though dogs are not kids); if they are messing around and annoying each other and they can work out their own problems, great. But if one is always tormenting the other despite the other's protests, at that point I think most parents would get involved. That's how I see it with the dogs.

Thank ladies I really appreciate the input...as for getting Sissy spayed, that is out of my hands since he technically isn't ''my'', but my partners. I really wish she was spayed though, but there is nothing I can do about that... I will try keeping his leash on him for corrections.
