So... I started introducing raw food to the pups today... Charlie went ecstatic and is the happiest boy in the world right now...

I was terrified at first about the bones (I'm sure like many) but after watching him devour meat bones and all I was relieved and feel much better about it.

So while one little dog is the happiest pup in the world...I had issues with the other.

Roxi doesn't seem to like it. She sniffed it.. gave me the "Wheres the food?" look.. licked it and walked right up to me. So I sat down and picked it up and tried to get her to eat it out of my hand.. no luck.. let her take it and she nibbled then came back to me..

this repeated until Charlie was done.... and finally I gave in and gave her, her normal meal.

Anybody have to introduce this to picky eaters? Any tricks? I'm thinking of buying boneless chicken and mixing it in her meal and see if that works but I think its the chewing/eating part she's not getting since she's used to bite sized treats/meals.

Any suggestions would be helpful :) Thanks!

Both of mine took to it instantly, but I have heard of pickier dogs. My suggestion would be to ever so lightly sear it in a pan with a little butter. Not enough so it cooks through (cooked bone = very bad), but just enough so it smells like food. I probably wouldn't feed with kibble. Most people recommend never feeding kibble and raw in the same meal as they digest at different rates and can cause some funny GI things to go on. I'm kind of harsh when my dogs choose to not eat something... they just don't get to eat until the next meal, lol. I've never had a picky eater though (at least not for more than a couple of days!).
Oh wow Im happy I didn't mix the kibble with the chicken!

I'm usually the same with the picky eater thing. Roxi every now and then goes on a hunger strike and we learned to just ignore it unless there's something obviously wrong (not eating anything for days and days and acting sick) which thankfully hasn't happened.

But I'm trying to ease them into it by mixing the meals. kibble in the morning and night and the meat in the middle. I'm also just trying to use up all the kibble lol. I didn't think a dog would be picky about eating raw meat! It just stumps me. The butter idea is great.. the boyfriend said I should smear it in peanut butter hah!
Don't mix! I did that thinking she would need time to adjust and she had horrible runs, i talked to another raw feeder and she said its very bad to mix because they digest differn't rates. Neeka took to it right away...she loves it...maye try putting some sardines or the water from the sardines in it....its stinky and dogs love it.
oooo that might get her to start chewing on it! She nibbles things when she tries them out and thats all I got her to do so far... :/ I'll update after this afternoon when I try again. Going to the store to buy a food scale :D
This is probably a stupid question...Where do you feed the dogs? Inside wouldn't they get greasy raw meat all over the floor and outside wouldn't the raw meat bring ants and bugs?
I haven't tried outside yet so I'm not sure. Though Charlie seemed to eat it in a good amount of time and wasn't really messy with it (little pieces everywhere if thats what you're thinking).

Inside we have a bunch of junk towels we have stacked for little things like mopping up the floor and wiping off dog feet so I just put one down and made sure they stayed on the towel. Afterwards I just threw it in the washer like all the others. I was also thinking of using baking sheets or trying to train them to keep the meat in their bowls (which I may still try to do over time). But the towel right now seemed like the easiest bet since its only once a day for the moment.

I am interested to hear what veteran raw food people do :)
I started out using towels and then got tired of doing laundry every night, lol! I have a large crate tray that isn't in a crate right now and they eat on that. I have one dog also that just gets her meat dumped in her crate at night.

The cookie sheet idea is a really good one! I don't know if they could be taught to eat in their bowls. If you watch how they chew up different pieces of meat that would be really hard for them if not impossible.
ooo good point on the bowl thing! (now what to do with the unused bowls... lol) I just came from BB&B should have bought some sort of tray thing there! I'll try to remember it next time.
I feed in a bowl--I make my own raw food and grind everything s its not in chunks and she can't take it out of her bowl to eat off the floor...her soup bones she gets in her crate---i don't fine them messy--and she eats them pretty quick. When she does get fish heads or turkey hearts or anything like that I have to watch her because she will try to take it out of the kitchen and hide it..
So I should have named this Ms. Picky Eater.

Charlie is officially the garbage disposal while Roxi is nibbling everything... Never really noticed this till now lol.

I got her to chew the meat a little bit today. She still didn't finish it really :/ Attempting the "You don't eat, You don't eat" to see if that gets her to try it.
I might get one of the BIG stainless steel bowl for her meat :)
So just to give a little update.

The "if you don't eat, you don't eat" finally worked! Today Roxi decided to eat her chicken (and like it too!)

Now hopefully this will continue but usually once we get her to eat something she'll keep eating it. Phew...

We had a small party in the kitchen afterwards LOL!

now to get her to eat it on the blanket....
