Anyone ever use "sonic" collars? Huge barking problem. HELP

Has anyone here ever used the "sonic" systems to stop barking. Or even one of the "spray" collars? I refuse to do shock. Here is our problem, Ein was broken in a large house with a big back yard so barking wasn't a problem. He would only bark when the doorbell rang. Then we had to move across state to an appartment. We were on the top floor and he only barked when our single neighbor came home. Then he was told NO STOP Barking if he went on for to long, which was rare. Now we had to move again and this time we are on the bottom floor facing in a courtyard. Now he's barking and howling at every little noise outside, and we are both (me and ein) getting really stressed out. Verbal repramand is not working, the spray bottle just makes him run-hide & pee, and I can't be home all the time. Any advise? BTW he is 3 years old.

I know folks generally don't like bark collars. But to be honest, Moira is a noisy dog. She never stops. And it's just because she likes to talk. Granted it's funny sometimes. But others it can be annoying. She has a stop barking command which lasts a short time and then she has to talk about something else. She's our ADD child. So, I got a bark collar for small dogs and it only took a couple of barks before she figured it out. Now all I have to do, for the most part, is say "bark collar" and she stops.
does the "bark collar" zap, spray, or make noise?
It zaps. If you've ever used a TENS unit, the zap is similar and increasing in intensity if the barking continues. When the bark stops, the unit reverts to the lowest setting.
We had a Citronella collar for a pup we had that barked for 8 hours straight, overnight. We got the collar and at 1st he hated it, but...... he soon got used to it and was not put off by the spray. He would bark and howl til it emptied and then some. We spent a lot of money on a trainer, who told us that he had Seperation Anxiety and would probably never get over it. I ended up rehoming to a family with a mum who suffered from Agrophobia, so he has someone with him all day and night and the rest of the family to walk him. He is still anxious now.
Sounds like Ein just thinks he is guarding the home, people appear outside, he barks and the people go away ..... hey ho my job done.
Is there nowhere you can put him during the times you are not home, so that he cannnot see the courtyard and therefore less stressed by these "intruders"?
well he doesn't ever see anything he just hears the people.
I don't know about bark collars but I did see one at the local petstore that didn't shock or spray. It buzzed. Like a cell phone. It was pretty expensive, but I thought it was an interesting solution. Two plastic spurs protruded from the inside and when the dog barked it would go bzzz (or when we made barking noises near it, since i was playing it). Don't know how well it works but from experience i know my dog hates having buzzing things near her. I turned a massage chair on while she was on it and she flipped out. :p
that sounds like a good one... I refuse to use a shock collar too. Charlie doesn't stop barking now... and is a bad influence on Roxi who rarely barked...

now we have a barking team... which is fine unless im working. It'll be nice and quiet and suddenly I think Im having a heart attack while two dogs are running around barking at stuff they can't even get to lol
that might work with his thick hair
We had a neighbor call in a complaint and ended up with a fine. First we tried the citronella, but they figured out if they kept barking it would run out and so they just came in smelling like citronella and kept on barking (hence the fine). So they both wear a shock collar while we are gone (as they are out in the yard when the weather is nice) and figrued out VERY quickly not to bark. They have not had any problems as long as you follow recomendations for time limit, cleaning the prongs, etc. and since the battery has lasted so long I know they really aren't barking. I think they figured out very quickly what the collars meant.
Good Morning - I just this morning put a "sonic" collar on Sadie and Leo is wearing a spray collar. Go figure - neither one of them has barked yet! Sadie is deathly afraid of anything that would shock her so I'm thinking (hoping) the noise will distract her and not hurt her to quit barking. Leo seems to react fairly well to the spray bottle but I can't be standing there 24/7 with the spray bottle, especially like at 12:00 in the mornings when my teenagers walk in the door. After reading the info that came with the collars I"ll need to take it off when they go outside and put it on when they come in so they learn barking outside = OK, barking inside= not OK. Kind of a pain in the ass and I'm sure I'll get no cooperation from my kids and husband helping with this. They feed off of each others energy (the dogs, not kids & husband) and when one barks the other one barks. They mostly bark in reaction to the outside dogs barking and when someone walks in the door. Both of those situations would be fine if it was only 1-2 barks or if they would quit when I tell them too but it's like they go brain dead. Sadie will stop barking if I really insist but then she has to grumble to let me know she can still do that if she wants to. I'll post after awhile and let you all know how these options have worked out for me. I'm going to try to teach them to also go to a corner (for treats of course) when they start barking in hopes that they associate the corner with (if they're quite )they get treats. Wish me luck! Oh yea - not cheap, spent about $150 between the two but it may save my marriage and sanity.
I recently had to buy a bark collar and have only had to use it 3 x's (for about an hour each time)...they learn fast and I stayed away from these for years but my Livvy not only would bark like crazy but single out my rescue and stay between the 2 of us and of coarse she would not come near me... I know this was a management problem but Livvy knew she had 5 acres to run and bark and this way I didn't need to be right there...all is well again! I think the down side to this is when people abuse what they're intended to be used for.
yea once the issue is at hand people need to stop using them. A lot of items out there are for training purposes but most people use them more out of laziness and all the time :( Its like I had to yell at my brother a few times because he abused crate training for "if the dogs in the crate all the time I don't have to worry about her" oye.
