Beck has decided that under my daughter's bed is the best sleeping spot in the house.  He goes to bed with us and sometime during the night, migrates to her room.  It's fine, it works, no problems.

Today he heard me fixing the breakfast plates and came out to eat as usual but before I even realized he was done eating, he had scooted back under the bed and wouldn't come out for anything.  He didn't even go out to potty which he always does like clockwork.  I called and called and nothing so I went to finish getting ready for work.  About 20 minutes later I checked and he was still under the bed and wouldn't come out.  I finally got his attention with an offer of a cookie and he came bounding out like nothing was wrong, took his prize, and went out to potty as it nothing had happened.  We have had him right at a year now and he has never hidden when we called him.  Sometimes he plays with us by hiding under the bed but you know it because he will make his funny little growl bark.  This time he was silent.  It concerned me enough that I have called home from work to make sure he's acting normal.  He's fine, hanging out with my daughter and dozing.  So, what was this hiding thing?  I know I'm overthinking it but I took it as pouting that I was leaving for work even though my 2 older kids will still be there with him, he wasn't going to go in the car with me and that leads to pouting.  But he has never chosen to ignore my calls before.  Could this be something more?

On a semi related note...I've been toying with the idea of getting another corgi to be his buddy.  The kids are going back to school soon and my boss is bugging me to go full time.  He seems more and more hurt when I leave for work now.  I make a special point of taking him in the car often but he seems to want more.  Am I projecting my guilt or should I really consider a buddy for him?

Thanks!  Sorry, I tend to ramble!

I would check very carefully under that bed, he may have something stashed under there......  As for a second Corgi, I would wait until I was REALLY EXCITED about adding another dog ( not just toying with the idea ) and then consider the other obvious factors like if and when and how I could make that work for all concerned.

It sounds like he might be guarding something under there.  Jeli tends to guard stinky socks or dead lizards....yuk!

I have 2 corgis that do this and I believe this is like their den and want/like to be in there unless something really fun is going on. I have totes of pics under my bed so there's nothing interesting or fun...as for another corgi...I agree with Anna:)

Thank you ladies.  I hadn't thought of guarding a treasure.  I didn't see anything under there, but who knows if he moved it or ate it already.  He was normal the rest of the day and didn't even sleep under there last night.  I guess it was just a quirk.  If it happens again, I'll know to look for a treasure or that it's just another corgi thing.

As for another corgi, it's nothing we would go into lightly.  Everyone here would really like another one but I'm no good with puppies (I totally suck at housebreaking!) and we aren't sure Beck would even care.  He lived with another dog when we adopted him but when we go to the dog park, he doesn't even look at the other dogs.  I feel sure it's just me feeling guilty and I would never bring another animal in without being 100% sure that we were ready and that Beck was on board.  I'm putting that idea on the back burner and see what unfolds over time.
