I was chatting on a community website, and Dog Parks and Kennel cough came up.  People were saying that the vaccine for kennel cough is only good for 6 months? I thought it was for a year.

Even though it is given annually, its protection only lasts approximately six months. In dogs that are at low risk (i.e. they do not come in contact with other dogs or rarely go to areas frequented by other dogs) annual vaccination is usually sufficient. However, dogs that often come in contact with other dogs, are walked in parks and are frequently groomed or boarded, every six months is recommended.
Most boarding kennels I know require it once a year. Sam's answer makes sense, though, and this also says every 6 months:

We generally only travel spring through fall and that's when we board, so I'm comfortable with only getting it in the spring like we do now. There are quite a few different bacteria or viruses that cause a disease commonly called "kennel cough", and the bordetella only covers one.
Yes, it only protects for 6 months and only against one of the many viruses that cause "kennel cough." It is not a necessary vaccine, especially if your dogs are not around other dogs much.
We only do it because we board; the boarding facilities frequently require it. Otherwise I would not get it for normal dog-to-dog interactions. In healthy dogs, it's usually just a nuisance.
thanks for the response, wow do I learn a lot here, my poor Chloe was at risk then! I have only been vaccinating this on an annual basis!
I would mot vaccinate for it unless you are required to for some reason. In healthy dogs fed a high, quality diet, the risk of contracting is low. Only in situations where your dog is extremely stressed or otherwise immune compromised would she probably be at risk. And even if she did pick it up healthy dogs can fight it off pretty easily, and usually with no or minimal antibiotics. Also remember that it doesn't protect against most of the strains. I looked it up yesterday to be sure, there are 8 strains of kennel cough and the vaccine protects against 2. In my opinion, the risk if vacciniosis that you take any time you give a vaccine isn't worth it for something like kennel cough.
