Breed

We got our dog from the pound, she was already close to a year old. They said she was a corgi/maybe sheperd mix. She is about 35 pounds, has the typical short legs but has huge paws. Markings like a type of sheperd, or? She likes to chase birds but does not play ball, does not love the water, is very mellow!

So, look at her pic and make a guess? Would love some opinions.

She is beautiful! I don't know but my guess would be not Shepard or if she is she would be mixed with another breed also as her ears and nose don't look like a Corgi or a Shepard as her ears would be up and her nose would be longer and more slender for both Corgi and Shepard.

That's a beautiful and very interesting animal. Just in time, I've sometimes caught myself wishing Al and Gwynn had slightly longer legs. I know this is a sin. And there are disadvantages to being larger. But if I were to design my fantasy dog, it might be something about that size. I'd keep prick ears, and I sort of miss the white splashes on face/neck. You might find this link interesting; she talks about the skeletal consequences of dwarfing in dogs (chondrodysplasia):

It'll be interesting to see if this intermediate physique is sturdier, easier on the back and hips. Those legs sure look strong.
The coat looks plush and soft too, but not too long.
It'll also be interesting to see how the personality unfolds.
But...uh... doesn't like to play ball? That puts corgi ancestry into some doubt. :)
Some of the best dogs come from shelters.

I'm tempted to say Chow but the ears are a little wrong; chow x something x corgi?

John is right; sometimes you can get something that "shouldn't" be so sound and functional and pretty, because they certainly didn't deliberately breed the dog to be that nice, but the genes combined very fortuitously and you end up with a real gift. She looks like a dog who was meant to be, which is a great thing for you.

I do love me some mixed-breed dogs, and she's one of the prettiest I've ever seen.

My first thought was Chow as well. Maybe Chow, Cardi and something else? It's hard to say but she is beautiful.

I think she does, yes, because the other option for the short legs (that's common enough to be a common mix) is a basset, and she doesn't look bassety at ALL. Oh, and I should have said "corgi" above, not Cardi. My fingers tend to go on autopilot and type Cardi since I talk about them so much!

She looks alot like my Thelma-Sue, except for the legs of course. Her mother is Aussie/border collie mix with unknown father. Thelma has one floppy ear and one pointy up ear and alot of fur and facial markings just like your dog. Aussie would account for the floppy ears and shorter broad muzzle. She's cute no matter what she is.
