Just today our eight month old puppy started having some loose, slightly green, and very smelly stools (two up to now).  He has been good at not going in the house for several months, but suddenly did one on our kitchen floor.  Then my husband took him outside as I cleaned it up, and he did another loose one out there.  Now he's in his crate (while the floor dries) and we're wondering what caused this so suddenly. Is it something he could have picked up in the yard? (I dropped a bit off a PopTart I was eating this morning for breakfast and he scooped it up before I could stop him. But I don't think it was more than a half-inch square off the corner.) He's up to date on all his vaccinations.  We do have to watch him as he wants to eat stuff out in the yard sometimes (think it's bunny poop).  Should we just keep watching him before taking him to the vet?  He's normal acting otherwise.

My first thought was that he may have eaten some grass while in the yard. When Abbey eats grass it makes her vomit...green!

Doggywobbles! The old ger-shep used to get the wobbles out of the blue like this. My vet said that a dog can pick up an intestinal virus without ever leaving the back yard...it can come in on bird droppings or just blow in on the wind. He said it's very common and not much to worry about unless the dog starts to lose weight or becomes dehydrated.

I'd switch him to bland diet (rice and cooked  hamburger) for couple days or so and see what happens. Be sure he has plenty of water available. If he doesn't improve after a couple of days -- or if he seems to get sicker -- then I'd take him to the vet. Sometimes nature will take its course and the dog will throw off the cause of the upset.

What Vicky said.  Every once in a while Katie will start throwing up for no reason that I can figure out.  After rushes to the vet I've learned not to be overly upset.  I have meds to calm her tummy and I give her a bland diet for a couple of days.  Who knows what they pick up in the yard even when you make sure there is nothing out there for them to get into.  Usually it's after the first trip out in the morning before I've had a chance to make a walk thru.

Thanks to all of you for your input and answers/suggestions.  Silas is doing great today with no signs of illness either from the front end or the back end :).  We kept him on the bland diet for all of yesterday while enduring those big brown eyes looking at you like "I'm starving here, Mom!"  He was only sick similar to this one other time in all the eight months we had him and that was right after getting "fixed" so we kind of expected something then.
