The 17 year cicadas will be here this spring along the east coast. They haven't been seen since 1996 and there will be millions of them. They don't bite or sting and they are not poisonous but cats and dogs love to eat them. If they eat too many it can cause real tummy upsets for our pets. Just wanted to make sure everyone was aware that they are due.

WOW, I have to say I'm glad it's you and not me...mine would all be puking as they love the crunchy June bugs and think it's a delicacy:( Do they eat greenery?
Jane....they don't do any damage to plants at all. They just come up every 17 years to mate and then die. I'm glad I'm not a cicada.
The world would be less populated...you'll have to post pics. I bet it's amazing! So do they lay eggs and they hatch in 17 years or what?
The adult female lays eggs under the bark of trees, when they hatch they drop to the ground and the nymphs burrow down as much as 10 feet and spend their life underground. The feed off of root juice. As adults they will drink sap from some trees and shrubs but they don't cause damage like plant eating insects.
It's really nasty having to rake up all those dead bodies. They crunch.
Sounds almost like peanuts for us...I bet dogs love them:) The June bugs are crunchy too!
ugh... good to have the heads up on that they aren't toxic. But man do they make NOISE and a HUGE mess. Thankfully our current yard isn't as surrounded by trees as our old. But they go everywhere..
Here's a link to a youtube video for those of you who won't get the pleasure of being bombarded with the "oooohh baby where are you??!! " call of the males. It's deafening.
