Is about five hours a day in a crate too long for a puppie:?

Nope, just make sure you section off the crate so that the puppy only have enough room to turn around. As soon as you let the pup out, take it to the potty, so that it'll learn the routine and schedule. check the FAQ area for more info on housebreaking. Good luck!

did you crate train? Sorry it took me so long to reply, been on a trip. So if you put puppie in crate at 7am and let it out at 3:30pm when the kids come home from school that would be ok? And the dogs don't feel abandond? I just want to be a good puppie parent. Please all input is appreciated.

Yes, I crate trained my corgis, including the fosters. The rule of thumb is age +1, so 1 month is 2 hrs, 2 mo is 3 hrs...etc. You pup's bladder will be fully developed and capable to hold 8 hrs by 9 months. Remember to treat potty as a mission, no play time until pee pee is done. keep your corgi on a leash, give the command, no sniff no play until task is done. If you setup a webcam at home, you'll notice your dogs sleep most of the day until you come home, so no, he will not resent you for it, when you leave, do not be dramatic and make it a big deal. Re-read the FAQ, be consistent, schedule and 9 months will fly by in no time! Good luck!

I heard it depends on how old the puppy is, and they get one hour per month they are old. So if your puppy is 3 months, they can be in a crate for 3 hours. Although, I know this "time method" tops off somewhere considering 8 hours is way too long for an 8 month old; I just don't know where the limit is.

I crate trained my pup, but when I was concerned about leaving him in too long, I sectioned off a part of my home (bathroom and a little hallway) for him to stay in and trained him to use pee pads. That way, he was a little less confined for those longer periods (I made sure there was nothing on the floor that could get him into trouble!). The crate actually formed one of the hallway barriers, and he would sleep in it a lot, actually. Just a thought.

How old is the puppy? I probably would not leave a pup younger than 4 months that long. Can someone come in temporarly? Also, be sure to take him on a long walk before crating. A tired puppy will do better in the crate.
