Crates
For those of you who crate their corgis: what size crate do you use? And do you prefer the plastic airline type crates or the wire crates? I am preparing for my new dog to come home on Saturday and come to find one of my airline crates has disappeared! I have one that Franklin frequently sleeps in that I may end up using but I'm also looking at possibly purchasing a wire one instead. What are your preferences? I have an ex-pen but want to put a crate in it as well for him to sleep and he is used to being crated at night. He's a growing pup so I want something that will fit his adult size. He's currently somewhere around 10 months old and 15 pounds (but looks much heavier in pictures). Franklin came to work with me when he was growing up, so I never had to worry about the whole leaving youngster at home alone thing. Trying to prepare now so I am ready when he comes home (if he ends up working out when I go meet him!). Thanks!

When we got Lance our breeder recommended the plastic airline crate type, she said it was more like a den for them. We use a wire crate for Tucker that a friend had let us use. I wasn't a big fan of the wire one, but now I love it. The wire one we have has two doors, so depending on what spot you put it in, if you can't access one door, you can access the other door.
The dimensions of the wire crate Tucker has is 30 L x 19 W x 21 H

Winston has a wire crate. When he was still a wee little pup, we use used the plastic liner that came with the crate but once he was potty-trained, we inserted a donut-shaped bed for him to lay on. He loves his little space but uses it less now. Unless it's storming, of course. When we leave the house, he usually has to go in the pen, but I've been working on letting him be a free-range dog for a while now. Still, sometimes he gets (bored/excited?) and eats/shreds any paper product on the floor he can find. I suppose if I could be less messy... haha.
But the size, well, I bought it from PetSmart for $20, it was on sale. It's a PetMate crate, the intermediate size. It came with a divider but to be honest, we never used it. Winston was pretty good about not soiling the crate and I was vigilant about taking him out every two hours to potty and after he ate or played in a huge effort to housebreak him as quickly as possible.

We have several sizes, I bought them all used so I didnt have to spend a fortune. Started with the smaller one when she was a little pup, and then went up to the next size. Call me crazy but now that she is going on 6 months we just got her a GIGANTIC one, so she has lots of room. I didnt do the large one till I knew she wouldnt potty in it. Which by the way she has not done once since we got her. We use the plastic ones also because it seems more cozy and den like. I did the same thing with our last dog and the crate size change worked well. I think you will get different opinions on both so do what works best for you

My Ella is a little over 6 months old now. I have a wire crate. It's approximately 24" x 36" and came with a divider. I used the divider when she was a pup to minimize her going potty in it. I always crate her if I'm going to be gone for a while. When I'm home she has free range of the house. I also bought a play yard for her. It's kind've a canvas and mesh type (octogan shaped) with two zippered doors. When I'm home, she almost never voluntarily goes in the wire crate but will spend time in the play yard with her chew toys, etc. The play yard has a top that zips on also but I don't leave her in this when I go away because I just don't know if she would be able to chew herself out. I've never tried the plastic type, although I have thought about getting one for when I need to take her to the vet, etc. I bought a fabric carrier when she was a puppy and of course she outgrew this in a hurry so that wasn't the smartest thing to do but I needed something to take her for her puppy shots so I spent the money. She must've enjoyed that though because sometimes I get it out and she will stuff herself into it just for fun! Good luck with your new addition!!

I think ours are both 36" length, the plastic airline type. Henry hates wire crates for some reason.

We don't have Ellie's new crate yet, but it will be 24" wide and 36" long. Her current crate is roughly 16" wide and 26" long and she has definitely outgrown it. Personally, I prefer a plastic crate over a wire one, but that's because I'd be afraid of Ellie getting a paw stuck somehow.
How cute! He's a bit smaller than Ellie (she's about 20 lbs.) but is roughly the same age! It'll be neat to have another pup to compare Ellie's growth to. :)

We use airline crates for all three of our dogs, because they are more cozy. Based on the instructions on the crate, we picked one about 4 inches longer than the adult dog (w/o tail). I took an old queen size quilt and sewed 2 lines at the 1/3 point width-wise then cut between the lines, then did it again so I have 3 pieces of quilt that the stuffing won't come out of when it is washed. Because it is much bigger than the bottom of the crate it can be made into a cozy nest.

We use wire. I will have to measure to get the size; either 30 or 36 inches.
The nice thing with wire is that you can cover it with a blanket for dogs who like cozy, and leave it open for dogs who like to see--- a lot of dogs don't like being locked where they can't see what is going on. Plus, the wire is much easier to clean. And as someone mentioned, the door on the side is great if you are loading the crate in the back of a small SUV.

Thanks guys! Looks like an even split between wire or plastic lol! Franklin seems to like his plastic crate as a hang out place but NOT as a place to be confined.....though honestly I never confine him so I don't think he'd care much for a wire one either lol. The only thing I didn't like about my wire crate is that it was SOOOOOOOO heavy. I guess it depends a lot on what the dog likes and dislikes so I guess I will have to see what the rescue uses as well.
