About two months ago I noticed that Libby was having difficulty with her bowels. I became really worried when I noticed that she was also getting mucus and blood in her stool. I took her to the vet and after an examination and testing the stool sample he said that she had colitis. I was really surprised because I didn't even know that dogs could have colitis! He gave me some medication and and told me to make her some rice. He said that perhaps it was something that she had eaten. Libby is having trouble with colitis again today! She hasn't eaten anything differently, so I am not sure why she is sick. I feel so badly for her! The medication did help with her colitis but it also makes her very ill. The first few days she had diarrhea (I am assuming that is why the vet suggested that I give her rice) and she also vomited. I was just wondering if anyone else has a Corgi with this problem and what you do to make them feel better.

Thanks!

What kind of dog food are you feeding Libby? Charlie used to go the vet constantly with bloody, mud butt and I discovered (by process of elimination) that he is allergic to grain. He now eats grain free dog food and has been diarrhea free for 2 - 3 years.
Diet is a big part in keeping colitis away. One of the symptoms of colitis is diarrhea. Colitis is usually a 1 time deal after the medication clears it. Here is a website on colitis http://www.emedicinehealth.com/colitis/page2_em.htm He suggested rice because it is easy to digest and fills puppy up. I would suggest trying another dog food. I would try to go as grain free as you can. Many dogs have problems with grains. Mnay are allergic. Many just have problems with grains. What medication did your vet give you? If Libby continues to have problems with vomiting, take her back to the vet. Are you done giving her the medication? If she continues to have mucous or blood in the stool, take her back to the vet asap. I hope she is feeling better. Keep us posted.
I have had two corgis with bouts of stress induced colitis. You have to make sure they don't become dehydrated. If it did not occur due to a stressful situation then I would definitely try different food. A couple days of rice and meat usually helps. Yougurt can also be helpful. Our Doberman suffers from colitis several times a year. She can't tolerate fatty foods or any change in her diet. When she has a bout we don't feed her for at least one meal and then she gets small amount of chicken(cooked in a non-fatty way, boiled or broiled) for a couple meals before going back to her food (it does not have wheat in it). I give her a couple spoonfuls of yougurt regularly too. Good Luck! Your vet should have talked to you about some possible causes.
Try white rice, fat free yogurt and cooked ground turkey meat for at least a week. Then start mixing in small amounts of dry food that has no cornmeal in it. We use Avoderm. If you give treats to Libby, use those Vitalife chicken chips for the week you're feed the rice diet. The idea is to slowly introduce more irritating foods - especially foods with cornmeal in them. Most likely her gut will calm down after a week of the white rice diet. Keep close track of what foods you add in (add them one at a time for a couple of days before adding a new one.) You will then be able to identify if one of them is the problem or you will see that her gut has calmed down and can handle the more irritating foods. This worked for our Brody, who had a bout of some kind of gut irritation with diarrhea and mucus-y stools.
