Dog Tags
We decided it was time for Finnigan to get a new ID tag since he was still wearing the one we made him when he was 8 weeks old. It took us forever to decide what to engrave on it given that we only had 4 lines to utilize. It made me wonder what most people put on their pet's tags. We ended up putting his name, my phone # and our vet's phone #. I considered putting his chip ID # but wasn't sure if that would be a good idea. What do all of you put on your Corgi's tag?

The front of the tag just has an "N" for Nibbler. I didn't want to put her name on it because I'm paranoid someone will find her and want to keep her and use her name to their advantage. I don't think it would have made a difference anyway. On the back we put "please help me home" then my cell and my bf's cell. When she got her microchip it came with an attachment to her collar so we just stuck that on along with her license tag and ID tag. That's an interesting idea putting your veterinarians phone number on. Did you also put the name of the practice or of the vet, or just the number?

I just put "Vet" and the #. If I had put the name it would have made the writing become too small. I just thought if someone found him and he were hurt, I'd rather they contact our vet then take him to a shelter, plus our vet has our address and everything on file.
I think our microchip company offers a tag for an additional cost but I didn't want to clutter his collar. that's why I considered putting his chip ID on this tag.

Putting the veterinarians number on there is a good idea. If we get Nibbler another tag and we have room I think we might do that :).

Ours don't have tags. Jack has his rabies tag, his city license tag, and his Therapy Dog tag and I really didn't want to burden his collar with a fourth tag! Which reminds me, we really need to get Madison a dog license....
I suppose I could get the license or something engraved with our phone #, but we would need to update that every year.
When I found a dog, the most useful thing on there was the address. It turned out she lived right up the road and I just grabbed a leash and walked her home.

We still have not gotten his license. We need to do that really soon or they'll charge us for doing it late!

On all the tags here we engrave I recommend the dog's name, phone number, alternative number, and if you want, the chip ID #. Vet numbers are great as well - my vet knows my dogs and we have open authorization there -- if they were found hurt, they would treat immediately up to a certain amount and wouldn't have to talk to me first.
People ask me why I don't recommend address or "reward if found". Addresses are great, but there's two things I don't like. One, if your dog got out of the fence or off the property, and they nicely put your dog back in the fence... there's a good chance the dog will escape again and get hurt. Better to have them call you personally or even take the dog to the shelter (or in my area me or the vet's offices) where they can call you off the tag. Second, I had a customer get their house robbed when their dog was out - beat that one. The people in the neighborhood knew the dog was out wandering (they found who did it) and took their chances robbing the property.
The reward thing is a touchy subject with me. Several times now, I've seen people abuse that to the point where I was rolling my eyes at folks, but yes, it was on the collar. One a few years ago that was really memorable was where a couple refused to give the dog up until the owner came up with what they felt was a suitable reward for the dog -- which happened to be 200.00. They wouldn't give the dog back for anything less, dead serious. We were almost afraid that they wouldn't give her back for that.
Some folks will tell you not even to put the dog's name on the collar, but I tend to personally like it on there for one reason. I have four dogs, and if one's out, they're likely all out. I want someone to tell me which Corgi they've found, not -- "I found a red Corgi." :)

I figured with my # and the vets # plus his chip (which does have our address), putting our address on the tag wasn't necessary. I do kind of wish I had put his chip ID on there though even though no matter how many precautions you take, there are always things that could go wrong. I wonder how many people that find a dog with no tags will take the dog in to be scanned for a chip. That's something I worry about. If his collar comes off and someone finds him and instead of thinking to take him to check for a chip decide to hang "found" posters that I may never see, how would I find him?

Our chip company provides a tag with a phone number and a number to quote. They'll use that number to I.D the pet and contact the owner. Maybe you should see if your chip company can provide something similar.
@Shepdog- I've heard similar things in regards to not putting your address on the dogs tags. I think Victoria Stilwell said that dog theives can use information such as the name and address of the dog to their advantage.

They do offer a tag with their info and the chip #. I just didn't want to overload his collar and it is an additional cost. I may decide to get one anyway.

Ours just have the dog's name and two cell numbers (mine and my husband's), but they only wear their collars on walks. They're all chipped... except Friday, dang it, keep forgetting. With Clue's litter I'm ordering microchips to do myself, so ALL the puppies will leave chipped to my contact information and then the new owners can add theirs as well. I figure that if all else fails I will always go get the dog, no matter how far away it is, so I want my info on them for their lifetimes.

Finn came chipped from the breeder. I think it's a good idea for breeders to chip their pups. His didn't have any contact info on it though. The breeder handed over all the forms for us to fill out and send in with our contact information. I think they charge you to change the contact info (at least I know the company for Finn's chip does) so in that case I am glad the breeder hadn't already sent in his info.
