Hello Corgi Owners

Has anyone experienced elbow problems with their corgis? We have a year old male, and he has been so miserable with a bad elbow. We have been to specialist and they say it is a common problem with corgi's.

I think you will get more responses if you move this to Corgi Health. The people who need to see it to help you, won't see it here. Ask Sam if you need help moving it or just repost it in Corgi Health.
Thank you, I had no idea about a corgi health website.
I just moved it for you. It doesn't make any difference as long as the question is still on the front page. As long as someone responds, it'll stay near the top where people will see it :)
Thank you for your help and time. I was just noticing how much your corgi looks like my little female. Where did you get your corgi? How old is your corgi.
I had a young large breed dog with elbow problems. It was due to "growing pains". He eventually grew out of it once his growth rate slowed. I have heard that corgis often face the same growing problems as large breed dogs and maybe this has something to do with the pain? Or is the vet thinking it is elbow dysplasia? That's a common problem in labs but I didn't know it was common in corgis as well.
Thank you for your input. I will bring up the growing pain thing up to my vet. Two different specialist have mentioned that they feel some weird stuff in there. I am going to get one more opinion this week.

Ginger had been limping on her front leg for a while.  We took her to the vet when it got bad and after x-rays the vet thought she had elbow displasia, and said it was common in the breed.  After sending the x-rays off to an orthopedic specialist, the results came back that she had panosteitis, which is essentially growing pains.  After 4 or 5 months and managing flare ups with pain meds, she grew out of it and hasn't had any more problems.

Thank you for your input. Hearing these comments helps with trying to somewhat understand "What might be happening" He will be seeing another specialist this week. I am hoping to have more info. and help for him.

So sorry you are having problems with your Corgi!  I'm not aware of Corgis being particularly prone to elbow problems, no.  None of the breed sites list it as a common problem, and none of the elbow dysplasia sites list Corgis as one of the common breeds.   But any dog can develop an orthopedic problem, even if there is no genetic disposition.  Just like people, sometimes things go astray in pre-natal development, or in the growth stage.

Good luck!  I hope it's something that can be easily fixed.

Thank you Beth, I appreciate your help and time with my question. Two vets have said Corgi's are prone to these problems. I have a female Corgi and she so far has no problems, but my little guy does. He has hip and back problems as well.

Of the dogs submitted for evaulation to the OFA, it looks like 97% had normal elbows. I wouldn't say it's a common problem in the breed, as far as I know. I hope your guy is feeling better soon.

I'm sorry to hear about your problem, I am actually in the exact same position. I have a 1 year old male corgi also and he's been limping for a few months. But the last few days it's almost miserable to look at him getting up (he does okay walking around).  We are waiting to hear back from the radiologist to see if it's elbow dysplasia...

The vet didn't want to confirm without seeing a specialist but she seemed fairly convinced. I thought the pain was in his shoulder but I guess not....

Let me know how your corgi does as it seems like they are somewhat in similar situations. I hope he feels better. It breaks my heart to see them struggling. I'm starting to put him on Flavocin (you should look it up, it seems like it has great reviews)!.
