My 1 year old corgi won't stop licking the top of her front paw for the last 4 days.  It's not sensitive to touch, so I don't think she hurt herself... but is getting to the point where it's really red underneath and pretty raw.  Does anyone have the same issue with their corgi? I wonder if its allergies or something.  We've tried putting the apple no-chew spray on it, but she still goes at it.

I found an online blog that suggested Benadryl. Has anyone tried this with their corgi? My girl is roughly 24 pounds... I just worry about that.

Any help is appreciated. Not sure if this is a vet-visit or not.

Hi Janette, it "Can" be allergies, the most accurate way to narrow down the allergen is get tested, there is no point in guessing by switching food. As far as letting the area heal, put on an e-collar.

Some dogs cannot take Benadryl, call and check with your vet first.

Check in between her toes. Quin was licking her paws and when I checked I found a tick, got it, no more licking
I have given Benadryl to Henry when he started licking his paws obsessively. It knocked him out pretty good but he seemed to handle it fine. I would still consult with your vet.

I've done the same thing.  Winnie had licked one paw bright red raw even after the vet had inspected it.  I think it is morning grass allergies.  I"ve also used Triple Antibiotic Ointment with a baby sock taped over it.  Surprisingly, Winnie hasn't been tearing them off and it is SO much better than an E-Collar.

my vet suggested benedryl, too, so you might ask yours about it.  One of my boys goes through a licking the front paws phase every once in a while but i can never find anything on or in the paw.  the benedryl helps, he gets sleepy and when it wears off, it seems that he forgets the paw obsession.
I don't know if our Hermione girl has allergies or not, but she does the paw licking thing too. This is usually a sign that it's bath time. We buy the special organic oatmeal shampoo and a bath usually seems to soothe her skin.

Thank you all. It has decreased a lot in the last day or two... but we are taking her in for shots on Saturday, so we'll ask the vet.  I appreciate the feedback. What a great corgi family.
