My 1 yr 3 mo old puppy has an issue with his right eye (on the left side in picture). The eye itself appears clear and fine, but somehow--either through him rubbing it or some other cause--the fur around the front is gone down to the where you can see pink skin. The other eye is normal looking. I took him to the vet as soon as I could get an appointment, which was on Tuesday. His eye looked this way when we woke up Monday morning. Sunday night it was totally fine. Monday morning was the only time I saw him doing anything to call attention to it (he was rubbing that side of his face against his paw a little), but since then he hasn't touched it or made any sign of being in discomfort. I'm confused how it got to look the way it does, unless he was rubbing at it all Sunday night while I slept.

Vet prescribed topical antibiotic ointment which I'm applying 3x a day and it's doing nothing. No sign of improvement at all. I'm supposed to bring him back if no improvement after 5-7 days but I know it'll just be another typical lame vet visit, an hour of waiting around so the vet can look at it for 0.5 seconds. Just wondering if this looks familiar to anyone, any ideas as to the cause or what I could do to help the area get healthy again? Has he rubbed the hair off or actually rubbed the skin (the black rim around his eye)?

I had a border collie mix with horrible pollen allergies and he would rub one or both eyes until he rubbed the hair off. They could also become swollen, red and watery. It was amazing how quickly it could become so irritated. We would use steroids and benadryl to help with his allergies.

Thanks. He isn't rubbing his eyes, though, or showing any signs of irritation. And it's just one eye, so I'm confused as to what's up. It gets a little worse/more bald around the eye as the days goes by. Antibiotic ointment vet prescribed definitely not helping.

If you have a choice, look for another vet. If we have to wait, it is seldom for long, and we get as much time with him as we need. Can't say he's cheap, though!

I use eye drops for dry eyes and cannot tolerate any with preservatives. That means my choices are the little individual packets ($$$) or a brand called Genteal. I really like the Genteal, which is available at Walmart and Target as well as other drug stores. If I were to need to use it on my dog, that is what I would choose.

The issue ended up being not eye-related at all; he was diagnosed with localized demodex which is a skin condition caused by mites, it just often appears around one eye. :(

Sounds like a nuisance but I'm glad you have an answer.

That's a beautiful Corgi that you have!
