Fast eating/bloat concerns : (
Hello everyone! I hope you and all of your fluffy friends are doing well!
Kenny, my going to be 15 week old puppy, is eating extremely fast. I mean he is eating it so fast that he's making this kind of coughing/choking noises! It is scaring me because that is one of the causes or the cause of bloat. Brenna, the Golden Retriever eats really fast too herself but she isn't choking it all down!
I feed him 3x a day and feed him a half a cup each time.
I know there's a bowl out there to slow down eating but should I get it?
Questions: Do your corgis do that?
Is it just a puppy thing or is he afraid that Brenna may take his food?
Should I get the bowl?
P.S.: He will, if I am lucky, will be starting puppy classes on the 13th and have his last series of shots as well on that day!!! HOORAY!!

I'd get a slow feeder. I stopped feeding my dog in bowls all together. She has to work for her food. We've done things like puzzle feeders, mazes, ect. I really like this compared to just slow feeder bowls. Other options are to do frozen kongs filled with kibble and yogurt or and IQ Ball. I also always make my dog do a down and wait before she eats. I tell her when she can get at what ever toy, puzzle, feeder I've given her. It is also helping her learn a good down stay as well.
Also, bloat can also be from the food as well. High quality food shouldn't get them to bloat. GL

I have never heard of an IQ ball or have seen those feeders before? The more you know!

I would not worry about bloat. The choking is not good, he could actually inhale a kibble. The special bowl may be useful, but I would make sure he eats in a quiet place away from the other dog and I would add some water to his kibble, if you don't already. Some dogs even worry YOU will be taking their food, so don't stand right by him when he eats either. Could he need more food? He is in a fast growth period. I don't have enough experience with Corgi pups to judge the amount.

Why add water in his kibble? Is it because it gets soggy so then it takes longer to eat or it goes down easier?
I'll ask the vet about adding more food. I'll be finishing up my finals on Tuesday, so then him and I can be more active. This is when I would increase it.

Honestly, 1.5 cups is a ton of food. Unless the food your feeding is really low calorie or not that great it seems extreme.

Andrea, that would be normal for a Corgi puppy. Puppies get about 50% more food than adults.

Guess my dog is weird. We fed her that much and she got fat. The doc even said it was too much. With the quality of food we fed her she didn't need that much.
Ok, scratch what I just said. I checked our logs. We did feed about that much at that age. We dropped the extra wet food when she went on her puppy diet. :P

Different foods have different amounts of calories, protein, and fat. And every dog is different.

In your case, some water can also slow him down a little and give him a fuller feeling. Don't worry about how fast he eats, just aim for no choking or snorting sounds.
