Feeding him the right food
Hi Folks!
This is my third week with Jackson, a 2 1/2 month old puppy. When we got him, the breeder gave us Eukanuba Small Breed puppy food, 5lb bag. This eventually ran out within a week and a half and I had to go purchase some more at Petco. I purchased a 20lb bag of Eukanuba Puppy Chiot- Growth Croissance.
When I got home and opened the bag, I realized the kibble was about 2-3 times bigger than the Small Breeds brand. The first day I fed Jackson, he didn't want any of it. Then I began mushing up the food (at the request of my girlfriend) and feeding it to him with my finger rather than the crate training method. To my surprise, he began eating some of it, but didn't finish the 1/2-3/4 cup of food I gave him. It has been a week since I have fed him the food and he has been cleaning up his bowl with no problem. (By the way, I only fed him by hand the first time I introduced the new formula to him, I have been crate training him and continued to feed him in his locked crate for about 15-20 mins per meal).
The vet recommended that I put 3/4 cup of dried food in broth and place it in the refridgerator overnight. When it is feeding time, I scoop it out and feed it to him. The food is much softer and bigger (soaked with the broth). I mush up the food and heat it up for about 30 seconds in the microwave, and it seems like Jackson loves it!
My question/concern is if it was the right formula to feed him? The first formula we fed him was Eukanuba for small breeds, and the second formula was Eukanuba puppy chiot- Growth Croissance (For puppies 1-12 months).

Our breeder actually recommended a large breed puppy formula; because of their long backs and big bones, she felt she didn't want them growing too fast.
Unfortunately, if you ask 100 people you'll probably get a hundred different answers. :-)

Puppy Growth is the right food. Eukanuba, I believe, has a small bites puppy. But it won't be long before your little one is scarfing down the big pieces.

Thanks for the quick responses! He has been getting a little longer. It is hard to believe that those pics were only two weeks ago! His ears are starting to become more erect, so less flopping unfortunately... but I still love it :).
@ Beth- How would large breed puppy formula slow their growth? I heard about this before but I didn't know how that would work?
@ Cindi, When I mush up his food, I leave some of the larger pieces there to see if he would eat those. When I secretly observe him eating, he pulls out a clump of the food and lay it out next to the bowl in his crate and tears it up and chomps them down, its pretty hilarious to watch I must say! Hopefully in a week or so he gets use to the food that I don't have to mush it anymore.

Usually large breed formulas are lower in protein to discourage rapid growth. Ther may be other minor differences too.

It sounds like the mushing it up is working and that's a great idea about leaving some pieces whole.
Ella liked the smaller puppy kibble and it took her some time to get used to larger pieces once she was a big girl. She was on some kind of Sam's Club "all age" stuff at the place we got her, and we put immediately on Iams Smart Puppy (bought it on the way home from getting her). The smart puppy is really little kibble, which was easy for her to eat. Now she is on Iams lamb/rice which is slightly larger bits. It took her about a week to get used to the new size.
I'm sure if you check out the different Eukanuba formulas they may have one with smaller pieces. You could also maybe mix half dry food and half can food.
Ella likes frozen green beans and carrots in her dinner, especially now with the hot weather.
