Female corgi with vulva problems

Claire 's urine taken directly from the bladder showed no bacteria, no crystals, and her ph is good.

a cytology test taken from the vagina showed no problems either. she was on prednisone and it cleared her up fine, I was hopeful she would be okay. but a week later her vulvitis has returned.

she does have a little fold of skin which could be adding to the problem, and the vet said we could do a slight vulvaplasty. the only other suggestion she had was to put her on ketakonazole for awhile, but i dont' want to do that because my other corgi got extremely ill on that medicine.

i just don't know what to do at this point. i feel so bad for her with her little raw vulva.

Check with Jennifer Markley...I know Seanna has had this problem...not sure if she has an old discussion on this or not.

Hi Patricia....I feel your pain!

My Seanna has the exact same thing. She just turned 6 (today as a matter of fact!!), and we've managed to keep her symptoms under control the past couple of years. I keep her hair trimmed REALLY short around her vulva. Every two weeks we trim- you can also get an electric trimmer. I was taking her to the vet to have her shaved, but she got nicked and got a really nasty infection, so I just trim the hair now. She is a master at thwarting my attempts, but we manage to get it done. Who would have thought that a dog with no legs could utilize them so masterly? She can clamp those things shut and it's like prying apart steel.

We also wipe daily with baby wipes...we had talked about doing surgery, and I was hoping to get it done with the last ACL repair, but she ended up having a major tooth break and had that extracted too. The vet didn't want to put her through that surgery too. And the more I thought about it and the vet and I talked, we decided if we can keep it at bay with what we are doing, we are going to wait on the surgery as long as we can.

thanks for the info, I am wiping with baby wipes twice a day, and applying a nystatin ointment twice a day now, and it does seem to be helping, but we did this before and it was only temporary. Claire doesn't have much hair around her vulva, so trimming doesn't seem to be the answer. Claire has always peed funny, when she pees her pee goes out like an arc, instead of going straight down. My husband held her standing on a bench, and I got below her and looked at the inflammed area, and it does seem to be under the little extra skin she has. So I am thinking when she pees in this strange manner, the pee gets trapped under the skin there. Now we are leaning to vulvaplasty, but still not too sure about it, as she does not have bacterial infections, just this weeping oozing area which turns bloody.
