Flying in-cabin with Corgi - How to make it go smoothly?

Hi corgi lovers! I have seen a couple discussions regarding flying with corgis, most of them regarding airline policies and whatnot. I am flying from Boston to Florida in a couple of weeks with my 5 month old corgi; she's small enough to ride in the cabin with me in a Sherpa bag, I have set up her reservations and everything.

My question is, for those of you who have carried your corgis on board, do you have any suggestions on how to make the trip go smoothly? I'm concerned about Schatzi objecting to being in such a confined space for so long. She is perfectly fine in the car, just sleeps or sits nicely like nothing is out of the ordinary, but then she is sitting on the seat next to me, not zipped up in a carrier. I plan on getting her accustomed to being in the carrier over the next two weeks, and will throw a Flossie in there with her on the plane, as those are able to keep her quiet and content for hours :P Just wondering if anyone has other suggestions on how to keep my corgi happy and comfortable for the duration of the flight?

I have never flown with my dog but I would say take her for a good walk before you leave so she has had some exercise, not only will this help with her being couped up but hopefully she will go poo also:)

Hi Pamela, you are very lucky to fly in cabin with your corgi :) Tryptophan from Turkey and Peanut butter would help, I would dice the turkey, mix it with peanut butter and put it in a kong in the freezer. call and check with TSA regarding to semi / frozen / liquid peanut butter.

Remember you cannot open the sherpa bag on board, I would gradually increase the time spent in the sherpa bag now.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely try something like that. I planned on running her around outside for a good time before the flight (as Kari and Quin suggested).

I know I am lucky to travel with her! I am flying down to Florida so I was worried that temperature restrictions would keep her from coming at all if she had to fly in cargo. As it is she will be making the trip and will be able to meet all of my family :)

also, it wouldn't hurt to go for a few car rides with corgi in the sherpa - so she's more use to it. Better than "surprise! you're stuck in this bag for a bit". when you go through security, you will need to take her out of the bag & send everything through the xray. Then you & dog go through the metal detector (dog in arms). So make sure you use a light (nylon, fabric, cord) collar so you don't set off the detector. This is also where getting acclimated to the bag comes in as she'll get stuffed back in after screening. I booked my flights for late morning /early afternoon so that flying coincided with "nap time". Mine was also 5 mos when we flew. He travelled like a champ!
