Grooming the Pants
One feature I particularly love about corgis, both Pem and Cardi, is the magnificence of their fluffy pants. Ace's have never been spectacular. In fact, they look a little raggedy. I'm not sure if it's a case of "I'm doing it wrong", but I would appreciate some feedback!
Yep, that's a corgi butt you're staring at. But you see how his pants go in a down and in fashion, and don't actually stick out? I'm wondering how I can correct this. Grooming them to "stand out" lasts about 5 seconds; Ace puts his otter tail down and the pants are back to drooping.

I use a rake on Seanna's to get the loose hair out-- but your hair looks a lot longer than hers is.

Is he out of coat? A lot of the body of the pants comes from undercoat. He may not even have his full adult coat yet.

Yes, he just finished blowing coat around a week ago. But his pants have looked like that since as long as I can remember. Do you think the longer hairs need a trim? The ones just above his hocks are really long, almost to the point where I'd say they're a bit too much.

I'd leave it be. He's just over a year old, right? He should get his first true adult coat this winter. You'll get a better idea then how it looks.

Yes, he's 14 months now. If you don't mind me asking: why do SO many show Cardigans look like they fill out, and get their fancy luxurious coats so early on compared to Ace? I mean, these dogs winning Puppy Sweeps and what not have amazing, thick coats and look huge. Ace looks so shrimpy any time I look at these dogs. It kind of makes me wonder if he's really behind.

Oh, that answer is easy! The puppy show dogs look so good because they only show the puppies who mature early.
Madison's littermate brother was Best Puppy at the National Specialty at 6 months old. Maddie was (I was told) a bit of an "ugly duckling" and didn't show at all til she was 2 years old; she went home to be a pet til she matured.
So the reason you see gorgeous mature pups is because their wonky-looking siblings are at home, waiting to fill out.

That would explain it, yes. I am so used to browsing the FB groups of show Cardis that I do forget that they weren't the only pups of their litter. Ace has been stuck in the tube on stilts phase for ages. It's hard to believe that maybe one day he'll stop looking like a string bean!

If it helps, this was Jack at 7 months (would NOT have won any puppy classes! lol. Looks like he has a whole extra dog's worth of hindquarters there,)

Oh gosh, wow. That is an enormous difference. :D Ace is over twice the age of Jack and still looks almost exactly like him at 7m. Did Jack's topline flatten out with age? Ace has a bit of a roach, I've found, when he's not pulling forward enough. He's so damn leggy in the rear that his back often has a slight arc. I don't care so much for the aesthetics, it's more that I don't want him to have the issues dogs have with a roached back.

OMG, that's quite a different!!!... My girl is about to turn 8 months old in a few days...And she looks like Jack (7 months) very well. Couldn't wait till see them filled out!!!
