Our AKC instructor is going to be doing some tracking classes and Bella is always following scents(or something). I was just wondering if you have and what it was like.
Our kennel club does tracking but we are waiting to start Ashton on it until he is done with Rally Excellent first. He already has a tendency to run the rally course with his nose to the ground so we don't want to encourage that behavior quite yet. lol But once he is done with that then we will give tracking a try. :)
I hope to have Sage do the rally and Bella the tracking, our trainer just spent 4 days in MI doing a training on this...she does this with her own dogs so I am guessing if she is that involved she would be good and I asked her what other classes a dog would need and she said non although Bella does have basic obedience. She was telling about her week and I just thought this would be a great Bella opportunity!
Hi Jane,
I haven't done tracking but have been doing scenting with Quincy. It's is slightly different than tracking. Quincy LOVES it! It's a lot of fun. Over the summer Quincy has mastered beginning scenting(6 weeks) and intermediate scenting (6 weeks) they took place outside which made the class more interesting and a little more challenging. We are about to start our 3rd scenting class next week called scenting games. Let me know if you decide to try it and what you think :)
I can't wait to try this...depending on when it starts...I hope we can join the 1st class...but due to winter and having to drive an hour each way...we will see. I will definately update...seems like all my social time revolves around corgi classes...haha!
put some vanilla on two a cotton balls... hide one and then have her sniff the other one and ask her to find it and see how she does. I bet she'll do great!
I tried it and I think she was offended that I would use fake vanilla! She's at work with me so I will have to try at home on Thur! Thanks for the suggestion! Maybe she wants a sock instead...I bet it I put a rabbitt turd inside a sock she'd find it!!!!!!!
You can also try to have her find scents like rum flavor, nutmeg, coconut, cinnamon.... things that are a single scent. Some she will like and others she wont. Quincy lets me know if he doesn't like a scent but he still finds it. They are funny!
We have just played with it my husband will hide his sock or t-shirt and send both dogs {our other one is a german sheppherd| after it and say go find it and Dyllan {our corgi} always finds it first...they love it
Lando Oliver sniffs out his balls in the yard. I tell him to "back up" and off he goes sniffing for his ball, all over the yard. It's quite amusing too watch as well.
