I have a three month old male corgi. I have had him for a month now and about 2 weeks ago he started this obsessive sniffing thing. He is obsessed with sniffing around the toilet and when he does this his sniffing gets really loud and deep and almost sounds like snorting. Its like he is trying to get as much of the scent as possible. But its so gross sounding. He now has started doing it to certain rugs around the house too. Has anyone ever experienced this?  and do you think he has a nose problem or it is just a weird habit?

Are you sure there's nothing around the toilet / rug? Dog's nose have 40 time more receptors than human :)
I know this is really gross but i think he smells the scent of poop and pee  coming from the toilet. and he likes that scent. I have lived in my house for almost three years now and when we moved in we had huge plumbing problems and the toilet overflowed a few times... although it was a long time ago and we cleaned the carpet many times since then possibility he smells the smells still! ew gross! haha but the rugs he likes are an outdoor rug and a rug in the kitchen. Im thinking he smells food on the one in the kitchen and who knows what on the one outside. maybe he is just likes certain smells so much he cant get enough??? but its not like he chooses smelling those places over playing or eating or sleeping. Its just if im in the bathroom getting ready in the morning or in the kitchen cooking something. just wanted to know if anyone else has experience this sniffing thing

A dog?  Sniffing at various revolting odors?!?  How very unusual!!  Especially when exploring its world for the very first time?  Really, really odd...

:-)

What a gorgeous puppy.

This isn't the reverse-sneezing thing, is it?  They occasionally do that, a real loud repetitive inward snort through the nose.

Try this experiment:  save some urine, some fish (preferably uncooked), and some meat or vegetable garbage in jars.  Let them sit  for a few days.  Then pour samples of each onto your carpet and/or furniture in various rooms of your house, and see if he spends a lot of time sniffing these...

:-)

LOL John, you are hilarious!

;o)

Sparty at about 1 year decided to lift his leg on the toilets. I really do have a cleaner house than that sounds!! I had him neutered and that ended it. Not sure if he considered that a punitive action or it just removed his interest in marking....
My puppy wanted to sniff and taste everything when he was younger. Yuk the things he would taste and eat outside! He would really sniff and snort and scratch in a few areas. I think he just wanted to get at what he smelled. Dogs like stinky things :o) maybe that should be :o(.
THe stinkier the better, our dogs figured out how to get into our first compost bin and sleep there! EWWWW.  Invested in a more upscale, totally enclosed one, so now all they can do is sniff around it, but at least they don't come in smelling like it!
Okay well im glad to know its perfectly normal and just a dog thing :) thanks!
