Absolutely not!! the dog doesn't care if it's new. If it's comfy they'll lay on it. I buy our cats toys all the time and their favorite things are boxes, leaves, and sticks.

True, Morgan has an appetite for cardboard boxes. I just don't want to spend money on anything he is going to eat. I have bought leashes and I am just fed up with him testing the boundaries. That and it is just fun to make stuff.

I think it's fabulous! It's hard to still spoil your furry loves one with the economy the way it is... I know that alot of the feed store are getting a lot more business because people are finding they can get their high end dogs foods at them for almost 20 bucks cheaper a bag than going to petsmart or petco... and Mine are on Wellness (a holistic food) and I ONLY PAY 40 Bucks for a 30lbs bag instead of 60 at petco....

WOW. We do not have feed stores where I live, or I would go there. Miranda was on Wellness brand dog food. I switched because of the cost and also because there was only one place within 50 miles of my home that carries the one she needs. Science diet was a little less and I am not at risk of running out with no alternatives. That is a big difference.

I also like to frequent the feed stores for better deals on healthier food. And as an added plus, I am supporting local business!!

I love checking out thrift shops and have picked up several nice blankets and waterproof pads (for pups). You could maybe find an oversize pillow and recover it??? I give you alot of credit for going green...reuse is great! I think that Morgan would much rather be loved and treated well than really care about where his bed came from! You could also check out a discussion on treats we had and make your own....I had a cheap recipe on there and a good one that would make Morgan lots of treats! I would also check ounce for ounce and serving size on food....I don't know but there may be a cheaper ones that you're not aware of...I use Premium Edge and although I never checked for sure I believe it might be cheaper you can google it and then find the nearest store that carries it...I use salmon but I know the chicken is cheaper and my dogs have beautiful coats without corn! Good luck on your projects and I can't wait to see the pics!

Yes...as mom of 3 said feed stores are getting more business...I get my food at a hardware store because the salmon Premium Edge is still cheaper there than the chicken at the pet store!

I got jordan's crate off the side of the road =) it was dirty and the door was rusty but a little cleaning and spray paint it's good as new plus it's more of a lab/retreiver size crate so he has a lot of room. Teagens crate came out of a yardsale for 10 bucks.
I make my own pup pops and use free dog food samples as treats for training. their stuffed toys are clearance from holidays (i just make sure they have no beans) and their blankets are from the good will.Your right in saying dogs don't care 1 bit about where stuff comes from.

If anyone needs a crate, go by your local shelter and check with them. I called because I donated a brand new crate I had to use for transporting Miranda as a pup (nd she grew out of that fast). They tend to get a lot of crates and it is not like dog food where it will be used easily. My local shelter also has a box of leashes, bowls, and odd items that come with the dogs that were dropped at the shelter that were not used. So if you need something, they are more than happy to give them to you. They are not new, but elbow grease is free!

And they are always happy to have things like Bandanas (for flare), toys, nice collars, etc. It helps them take care of teh dogs, and it also helps the dog look more appealing. I am not kidding. A nice bath and a bandana can sometimes mean the difference between a forever home and none.

You aren't crazy. That's a super cute dog bed pattern, I'd love to see the pictures if you end up making it.
When we first got Ella, we bought her a super cute bed from Petsmart ($20+). So of course she learned how to unzip the "washable" cover with her teeth and then proceeded to shred the foam inside. She now sleeps on an extra fleece blanket that we had around the house, that she loves to drag around with her. She loves this blanket more than she ever did the expensive bed.

I was just out of college and I was having an empty nest syndrome from not being with my little sister. My family couldn't take it any more, and I got Miranda. I paid the breeder a lot of money, she got a $90 dog bed, lots of toys, and then after the first 6 months I realized that none of the other stuff really mattered. She likes old socks sewn together as much as a $10 toy. I do not regret the dog bed, because it will last a life time (I will make that bed last a life time for what I paid for it) and she was worth every cent. I would rather save the money and use it for something important.
I work 70 - 80 hours a week, I am exhausted, and I have the flu. I have NO debt, and I am planning my first vacation in a long time. I can do that because of the money I save. And the dogs love it because I play with them and snuggle them. They are the two most spoiled dogs I know, and I have known a few. The only thing I might buy off the rack for them is a winter coat for Morgan because he is so small and he has hardly any fur. 2 feet worth of snow is a lot to a foot high dog.
