I was having a conversation today with a co-worker and realized that she really had no clue as to what puppy mills are! Most of us on this site love our dogs dearly and definitely want all animals to have a good life. My thought was how can we gently teach others that not all places that sell pups are in it for their love of dogs. My goal for myself is going to be to get the word out there that many of our 4 legged friends live in terrible conditions and do nothing but produce puppies for greedy people to make more money! This doesn't mean I'm going to put up posters or anything but just think of the impact we could have if we were all able to teach a few people the importance of where their potential animals may come from and why it is important.  I'm hoping for a day when animals don't have to suffer to make people a little more money!

Maybe you could post articles of puppy mill raids in your work place. You could make it into a flyer letting people know of great volunteer opportunities with the humane society and also how they can do their part in stopping the support of puppy mills. That way it wouldn't be so much a poster about bad people but a poster about how people can make a difference and why they should do it. Many work places encourage volunteer ideas for the community.
Actually I am very proud of the many things that my company does do for animals. I work for a company that provides services for the disabled and many of my coworkers and the people we support do help with our local humane society. One of my coworkers that I work close with spends about 20 hours a week volunteering and we have many people that help some of the people we support sew cat/dog blankets/quilts and these are given to the new owners at time of adoption with a special label! It's one of the ways that our people who get support can give back to the community along with visiting and playing with the animals. We have many that also help with fund raisers! We also have 2 rescue corgis at one of my houses!
The puppy mill raids post is a good idea!
Letters to the editor of your local paper can help spread the word. Better perhaps to talk a lot about what to look for in a good breeder and mention the puppy mills in passing; the older I get, the more I tune out things that try to tell me how awful something is! Even if it's true, a lot of people will just skip something if it's really negative. By giving tips on how to find a reputable breeder and then contrasting it with a puppy mill, perhaps people would be more inclined to continue reading.
Oh, and another good thing is to spread the word on choosing an appropriate dog for yourself. Sure dogs end up in rescue because of breeders over-producing and people not spaying or neutering and having whoopsee litters. But they also end up there because people get a dog not knowing its needs, and having it end up being too much for them and so they surrender it.
