My corgi just turned 5, and he has a few extra pounds. He only eats once a day at night even since he was a baby. He won't eat except at night, and I thought since he is older now maybe he would eat twice a day. I usually feed him a little more than half a cup at night only, but now I have started to try to cut him down and get him used to eating twice a day. How much would you recommend? Someone mentioned once that I should have his thyroid checked too, because he is pretty active and goes on walks with me. He is a small corgi as far as height goes. He eats Eukanuba Adult Maintenance small bites. Thank you!

Ever* since he was a baby.
I have two adults and one that just turned 1.
The eldest gets a half cup a day. The middle dog gets a full cup. The 1 year old is getting a half cup. The amount the younger two get fed gets changed a few times a year. I don't know what makes their weight fluctuate, but when it does we add or take out a quarter cup or so for a few months. The elder maintains 19lbs at a half cup.
Since they're all so similarly shaped, pretty small corgis, I think it's amazing how the amount of food they need to maintain weight varies. You really need to let go of the bag recommendations and figure out what's right for your dog.
Pippa gets 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup in the afternoon. If I feed her at any other time she refuses to eat. Dante gets 1/2 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the afternoon.
Mine get a handful 3 times a day...about 1 1/3 cups but they are always busy. I would suggest replcing the food you take out with frozen green beans.
Rachael,
That is what I am trying to put Dragster on, Drag is the same way, he won't eat unless it is at night! . Sarah, I have never went by the bag, come to think of it, I have no idea what it recommends. I think I will try to cut him down a little and try to see if he will eat twice a day to see if he will lose a few pounds.
