I must have the most finikey dog EVER. She wont eat her food again!!!

So, it looks as though Maggie is being a food diva again. She has given us so many issues with her food. We have tried brand after brand...probably 7-8 of them now, and she will eat it for a while and then she will sniff her bowl and walk away from it and not touch it until late in the afternoon. She only gets fed once a day as we narrowed her down to that since she wasnt eating her other 2 meals when she was a puppy. We bought her 3 brands of food, the top 3 that she seemed to like the best, once she turned one, and we mix them or rotate them out. This seemed to be working up until 2 days ago. For some reason she is not eating it again until late in the afternoon. She will take out 3-4 kibbles, bring them to the rug, lick them, eat them, then give it up. She only eats 1.5 cups a day as we want her to maintain a healthy weight. With that, she gets about 5-6 healthy treats a day. I mix in 2 tsp of halo dream coat in her food..she will lick that up on its own.

It is incredibly frustrating. From day one, she is the only dog that I have ever heard of that will not gobble up her food instantaneously. We do not give her table food, but if we are cooking and something drops, or a paper towel, or a tissue, paper...etc...forget it, it is gone! So she will run after things that fall on to the floor but she wont eat her food!? I don't get it. I am beyond frustraited now though....we CAN NOT keep switching her food...it is not healthy...from what I have been told.

Any ideas...plllleaaase. lol

i may try that if she does it again. sounds like it works!
I do the same thing that Cat does - but I don't think Killian has ever been picky about his food. My problem was more how he responded when it was the wrong food or he was over-feed. :) Just out of curiosity what foods are you using now and what have you tried that she didn't like? With finicky dogs I've had in the past I've had to do kibble/canned/raw rotations to keep them interested.
right now she gets Nutro Max/ the goodlife recipe. She really likes the good life recipe but it isnt the best hting for her which is why i do half and half with the nutro. I mix in 2 tsp of halo dreamcoat into it...she likes that alot. These are the other ones we tried that she did not seem to enjoy:
-eagle pack
-nutro max beef formula
-all natural balance formulas
-Iams naturals
-Halo spots stew

The only one she really liked is the one we found for her last 3-4 months as a puppy- nutro max puppy...she loved that stuff.
Looks like you've tried a ton of different stuff there! If the suggestions below don't work out you might want to go into your local pet food place and ask if they have samples. I know the place that I usually go to not only has samples of the stuff they carry but they let you return a bag if it doesn't agree with your pup. Pretty good deal. We had to go through a bunch before we found something that Killian could eat without going poo every 2 hours. :) Keep switching and you'll find something!
First, there's absolutely nothing wrong with switching her food as much as you'd like. Nothing bad is going to happen; in fact, dogs who get more variety tend to have less diarrhea and other symptoms when they get a different kind of food or something they're not used to.

Second, I agree with everyone that she's probably being fed too much. She's self-regulating, which some dogs do but many do not (hence the epidemic of fat corgis). That's three times what each of my dogs gets fed. If she can actually get good and hungry, she'll eat much more eagerly.

Third, there's nothing wrong with table scraps :). As long as they don't contain a lot of onions or tomatoes or eggplant, they're usually great for dogs. Tonight my dogs got chicken backs, ground beef, veggies, tripe, and italian sausage soup (the leftovers from the human dinner). So if she will eat people food eagerly, there's nothing wrong with indulging her at least a little. Any raw meat (if you're trimming a roast or cutting up a chicken) is fantastic to mix in with her food and give everything a little bit of a nice meaty taste or smell so she eats more happy.
well i guess it is a good thing that she is weight conscious. haha
Scout recently tried something like this after my parents fed him human food which is a big no no around my house. He is too smart and if he thinks he can hold out for some of my food he will. I just filled his bowl and when he didn't want to eat I just walked away. He would come into my computer room and stare at me and pout a little bit then walk out. Eventually I heard him eating and he finished his food. That went on for about 3 days now he's back to understanding that i'm not going to throw him table scraps.

If your dog is eventually eating I wouldn't worry about it, just keep feeding her and she'll keep eating when she feels like it. If she was flat out refusing to eat it then I would worry about it.
Haven't read all the replies so don't know if it's been mentioned but try adding something yummy to her biscuits. Imagine how bored you would be if you got the same old biscuits to eat day after day after day. If she doesn't get meat I'd start giving her some. Cut down the biscuits and add a few chicken wings/necks/legs or a lamb flap. You can also try mixing some low fat lactose free/natural yoghurt with her biscuits. Another thing is dissolving a beef/chicken/whatever flavour stock cube in some warm water and pouring that over the biscuits. Another idea is to get a tin of tuna in brine or springwater and giving her that. My guys LOVE their tuna and the juices soak into the biscuits and I'm sure she'll eat it all :)

So there's just a few ideas. When I've seen this problem crop up before a lot of people suggest just taking away whatever she doesn't eat after 15 minutes and give nothing else until the next meal time. A hungry dog will eat eventually.

You could also consider stopping the treats. She could be filling up on these and therefore has no reason to eat her dinner because she's had treats.

Contrary to what they want us to believe, corgis don't need a lot of food. I'd stop the treats all together and only give them to her as a training reward.
thanks for the tips! She usually only gets 2-3, as reward or stuffed into a toy to chew on. I say 5-6 because I dont know how many my boyfriend gives her when I am not there. lol And they are small sized, and healthy ones. But maybe she is getting too much food...hm...we will have to try a few things and see!
Though most Corgis are pretty greedy, to me it doesn't sound as though you need to worry; after all, Maggie IS eating what you give her. I have 2 Corgis, one is typically greedy, and the other seems to get bored with her food every now and then. I don't worry too much, but it is inconvenient because the Big Eater will finish both bowls. So I add "sauces"-a bit of plain yogurt, or I use kibble to clean out a pan after making people food (curry is a big hit, a tiny bit of bacon fat or just olive oil makes a change).
Don't worry. If she doesn't eat just leave it alone, she'll eventually eat it.
Also you're supposed to feed a corgi only 1 cup a day, so maybe you're just feeding too much.
Lucky you, my dog will eat everything that falls on his head and inhales his food within seconds.
Maria and Shiro - You can't have an amount of food allocated to an entire breed. Each dog within a breed would have different energy levels and metabolisms and a different build, so saying a corgi only needs one cup a day isn't very accurate.

For example a corgi who works on a farm is going to need a lot more calories than a corgi who goes for a walk every second day and just plays a bit at home.

One of my corgis needs more than 1 cup of food each day but if I gave my boy that much he would pile it on. My girl is on the smaller side for a corgi and so needs a different amount of food to my boys who are on the bigger side.
