Oh, I am so upset. I was driving with Hannah and had the window down for her, like usual. Next thing I know, she jumps out. I was doing no more than 25mph, but she landed in someone's driveway. I slammed on the breaks and went to her. She came right to me but was crying. I took her to the car and saw that she was bleeding near her mouth. I called my boyfriend (I was right down the road), and he came to help. I was hysterical. He called the vet and they had him check her over. She seemed okay. Just shaken up and a little bloody. She scraped up her chin pretty good and has quite a bit of swelling there. She also has a chunk of skin missing from her leg. The vet said that if she seemed to be acting okay and her gums were still pink, she would likely be fine. They said to monitor her for a while and see how she does. It's been about an hour ago, and she's already back to playing and such. Is it okay to use neosporin on her? I'm afraid that she will lick it off her mouth.

I'm going out tomorrow and buying a harness for the car. I am so upset with myself for letting this happen. It could have been so much worse, and it would have been all my fault. Ugh. I'm so paranoid that she might have internal injuries or something. Do you think I should take her in to get checked out tomorrow or just let her be?

Sorry for rambling. I'm just still in shock, I think.

It looks REALLY minor compared to the other car jumper I saw ... never mind, you don't need to know. But I think she will be fine. Actually I wanted to say that you should get her into the car again soon and praise her a lot so she does not become afraid of the car. Give her treats, praise, but don't coddle. The physical injuries will disappear soon, it is the anxiety I would be worried about in the future.
She has been in the car several times since it's happened, and I've noticed that she hesitates getting in at times. She used to jump right in, but now I have to coax her some. I suppose I'll need to use some positive reinforcement like you said. I definitely don't want her being afraid of car rides as she goes pretty much everywhere with me.
I hope she's ok!

I never thought about a harness until we were going to the vet yesterday and my little guy decided it would be quite fun to sit on my lap while I was driving. Oh the saddness in his eyes when he was told no...
Aww poor baby, hope she is feeling better soon. I am constantly telling my kids that they are not allowed to roll down the windows more than half way so that KC won't jump out. She also thinks she should get to sit on the door frame where the arm rest is why I am driving, we have some discussions about how that is not appropriate. I have never considered harnesses, not because I don't love my dogs but because I have three kids occupying all the seat belts.
On a lighter note, my "puppy" Taz who weighs 27 pounds, is to afraid to get out of the car on his own even when it is stopped and will literally stand up on his hind legs and put his paws on my shoulder like a toddler so that I can lift him out. It is SOOOOO funny. I didn't teach him that he just started doing it on his own.
Poor baby! I hope she will be fine! I've been thinking about a harness for Penny and this does it for me...not only because she could jump but because she thinks she should jump into my lap when I'm driving too and it doesn't work so well!
We harness both of our dogs in the back seat, and it works wonderfully! I don't have to worry about them, and I know we are doing all things possible to keep them safe. I am glad your Hannah is doing okay....that sounded like a very scary situation!!
Is Hannah better now?
Oh yes. She is doing much better. She is healing nicely. Nothing major came of the situation, and I keep her restrained in the car at all times now!
Glad to hear she is doing okay.
Aw, poor Hannah! My old boy, a senior mix named Bruce, decided to follow me when I left him and my teenager kids in the car while I ran into the store to grab a loaf of bread. Right out the car window! At least the car was standing still, but I was amazed the old boy would make that jump! From then on we only keep the windows halfway down. I'm glad to hear Hannah is feeling better. Are her teeth ok? Sid got out our door once and streaked down the street, smacking face-first into a moving car. He lost two teeth but otherwise was ok. Man, was that scary!
