Hello,

So I recently became a Corgi parent about a month ago when I rescued Maggie from the local Humane Society.  She's about 16 weeks old and has recently developed a jumping habit. She loves to jump and leap and sail over just about anything in her path when she's playing.  My legs, boxes, pillows, her Husky pup cousin, her toys. My vet said to be cautious with Corgis because they are such long dogs they can have back issues. She's only does this during play and when she's really excited over a game of fetch, but I'm wondering if I should try to break the habit early.  I know Corgis are herders and very active, so I'm wondering if this is just one of those things they do!  Let me know what you guys think! I'm new to Corgis, so any information you have would be great!

Thanks,

Kristin

I'm not a expert, but the first thing I thought when I read this was, "sounds like a good agility dog". Maybe if you did some of those things it would expel some of that energy? TBH I have no idea, I'd just ask to see what your vet thinks and see what other people say. In my small nonexperince opinion, it would seem better to channel the energy to something else instead of just snuffing it out.

With puppies you do ot want to allow behaviors that you don't want to see more of later.... What she needs is more structured exercise, in other words lots of walks.  A tired puppy (within reason) is a good puppy.

Anna is right...try channeling that energy into something else.  Long walks or at least as long as a young pup can handle.  You do have to watch their backs especially with jumping off of things.
