Moving with corgi
Our six year old corgi will be moving with myself, husband, toddler, and baby from MI to CA this summer. Winnie, our corgi, gets anxious when in the car even for short rides (heavy panting, sometimes shakes). We are very torn about how to handle our upcoming move. With two children flying seems like the easiest route but my husband is worried about how Winnie will do. What are your experiences? Thank you in advance!

Talk to your vet about it. A light sedative may help. If you take the dog on the plane, is she small enough that they'll let you bring her in the passenger compartment?

i have moved 3 times with 2 dogs and 2 cats. it was tough because the cats wanted no part of it but it was doable. what worked best for us was a semi roomy kennel with a towel over the top and some calming meds from the vet. it takes the edge off and stops along the way too of course :) after a day or so they calm down and realize it is what it is. as far as them settling in to their new home, they will just be happy to be out of the car

We usually use a safety harness in the car with the seatbelt, but it's good to know they calm down once they know there is no other option ;)

haha yeah they just learned to accept it for what it was. i also recommend using canned food and adding some water to it, this keeps them hydrated :) if your dog uses a safety belt, then a car seat is a good option. he can see out the window and its like a big bed so they feel comfortable. Baden also stresses while in the car but does way better with in a car seat

I would get the dog used to his travel airline crate, by having him sleep in it every night for a good month, if you have the time and I would fly, not drive. With a toddler and baby you have your hands full and the easiest, quickest way will be the best. The dog may not like it, but he doesn't like the car either and, guess what? sometimes we just have to make the best of a situation and that goes for the dogs too.... Pet Naturals of Vermont makes some calming chews for dogs. I have used the ones they make for cats and found them quite helpful. Petco carries them. If you decide to use them, try them out first at home, maybe taking the dog in the car, to see the reaction. I would give it 1/2 hr. before travel.
