Well I took Kirby (puppy finally has a name!!) to the vet today. He has been having uncontrolled diarrhea since I got him. About 2 hours before my appointment he totally crashed. He was very lethargic and trembling uncontrollably. I took him in early because I was really worried about him. He had a 105.1 tempterature!! (normal is around 101). We did a fecal and he is INFESTED with giardia. REALLY REALLY REALLY bad infection. The vet said his intestines feel really inflamed and thickened. He also has pretty bad kennel cough. We sent some bloodwork to the lab because the vet was worried about his fever. Kennel cough doesn't really cause a fever so he isn't sure if the fever is from the giardia or if he has something else going on. He kept asking me over and over and over if he is vomting so I am thinking he was maybe suspecting parvo due to the thickened intestines, severe lethargy (today), and high fever. So glad I was able to report no vomit! I am really really frustrated with the rescue though. Just frustrated that I had an application in to Kern Animal Control where I could have got him for around $60, but instead the rescue pulled him "to prevent him from getting sick" and then charged me $375, and now look where we are! I'm $300 poorer and my poor baby is still incredibly sick! Also, the rescue posted a new dog for adoption yesterday that they had just finished treating for kennel cough! I want to tell her how I feel about this but need to find a constructive way of venting my frustrations to her. I know they can't control who gets sick and who doesn't, but to pull a safe dog and use the excuse of preventing disease, and then adopt him to a new home loaded with giardia and sick sick sick is just a bit ridiculous. They didn't even do a fecal or a heartworm test on him and he was supposed to come with 30 days health insurance but she made no mention of that at all when she gave him to me (not to mention didn't give me his rabies vaccine certificate or tell me how to register his microchip!) And he is less than a year old and she said he is fine with just one DHPP vaccine, when ANYWHERE I've ever worked and EVERYTHING I've ever learned about the immune system and how vaccines work say you have to have at least one booster for almost all the dog vaccines (there are a few exceptions but DHPP is NOT one of them). Just so frustrated with all of my dealings with this rescue and its so sad to see Kirby so sick :-(

poor kirby:(

i hope he gets better.it must be stressful for both you and kirby.

Wow, sounds like an awful experience.  I hope Kirby gets well soon!

I am so, so sorry for Kirby.  I hope he is feeling better soon.

Is there anyone you can report them to, that is totally unethical!  Good luck Kirby, we'er rooting for you!

I don't know. I am kind of just over it all. After I sent my angry e-mail yesterday she wrote a reply today saying he was kept for a quarantine period and she signed him up for his insurance the day I got him. Both statements are COMPLETE lies and I have paperwork and documents to prove that she is lying on both accounts. She pulled him from the shelter the day before she posted him online which was exactly one week prior to the day I got him. Quarantine is AT LEAST 10-14 days. Had she kept him a full 2 weeks he would have had all the symptoms. I also have proof that she enrolled him in insurance on March 8th which was the day I told her how sick he was, not March 3rd which was the day I got him. If she had done it the day she claims, insurance would cover his illness, but since she is lying, they won't.  I just don't even want to deal with her at all so I am not going to respond. This rescue has an East Coast branch and I may dig around a bit and see if I can find  a CEO or something for the whole rescue. I know the East Coast branch was around first and then the West Coast part opened.

You should definitely report her and find some way to prevent others from having to go through what you're going through.  People believe that breed specific rescue groups are thoroughly vetted and have high standards regarding the care of the care and placement of their rescues.  Many times, rescue groups are posted on the national breed's list of rescue references, lending that rescue group even more authenticity.  For example, here is the link to the corgi rescue posted on the national pembroke welsh corgi club:

http://www.pembrokecorgi.org/rescue_network.html

Since many of these groups listed in the link are area specific (such as the Houston group), the groups will have links to area specific rescue organizations and post them on their website.   If I wanted to rescue a corgi, I would go to use these sources with the fullest confidence that I'd be adopting a healthy corgi.  If your rescue group was recommended by these sources, then you definitely need to report them and get the group pulled.

I applaud rescue groups for the work they do but when a group seems to be more interested in profitting off the animals they rescue rather than ensuring their health and safety, they should not be in business.  Poor doggies.

It wasn't a breed rescue. In Northern California we only have 1 specific corgi rescue and they won't adopt to me because I live in an apartment. I have applied for corgis through them before. My preference would be to not go through rescue at all and pull straight from the shelter but in this case the rescue cut in line and pulled the dog before the general public was able so I didn't have much of a choice but go through them. Young corgis are so rare in shelters/rescue in California that I couldn't pass him up. Also. pretty much every corgi I am aware of in rescue in California (except ones I've already applied for) are dog or cat aggressive so I can't get them. Just a sucky situation, but at least I got my corgi and he seems no worse for the wear anymore, just lots of money put into vet bills.

Did you post a review in the relevant section of this site? If this useless person has done it once, she'll probably do it again without a moment's hesitation. I would hate for another corgi to experience a similar fate, and another owner to end up taking the brunt of the vet bills thanks to her ongoing incompetence.
