Once again Gretzky has been licking his paw until a sore has formed.  This has started within the last 4 days.  Someone told me tonight that paw licking is sometimes due to allergies.  I've always thought it was from boredom ( which really shouldn't be the case ).  Has anyone else experienced this and what did you do about it? How does one know if their Corgi has allergies??

My last Corgi, gizmo did this. She didn't doit to the point of sores but her constant licking made her toenails constantly crack, rip off, or become exposed. She went outside a lot with me & many hours were spent on her so boredom wasn't it. The vet said allergies & had me give her bendryl, it worked for her. But talk to ur vet b4 u do that.
Thanks so much for your reply. I am going to wash her paws more when he comes inside. We did go camping last week-end and maybe he had a reaction to the different grasses . I will check into Benedryl if it continues.
Hi Deb!

Was Gretzky out in different grasses? I noticed today that one of mine that was out in weeds last night was doing this. They will do this with other allergies also but I don't have personal experience with that. Have you checked his paws? You could try washing them with a very mild soap if it has anything to do with weeds/grass.Benadryl is something you could try...I would try one and see if it helps. Good luck!
Hi Jane - Thanks so much for your reply. We did go camping last week-end and maybe he's had a reaction to the grasses. I am going to wash his paws more often , especially when he comes inside. I amy check into the Benedryl if it continues. Take care, Deb
Noodles is back to licking his paws again, so I just have to remember to wash his piggy toes off when we come in from outside. I don't notice this if he has only been in our yard, but he always licks his piggy toes when we get back from our walks. He doesn't lick them so bad that they develope sores. I know my parents dog was given benedryl for her allergies, but I haven't had to do that with Noodles. Just washing his piggy toes makes the difference.
my Heidi did that for a little while, but I'm pretty sure she was just bored. I had broken my pelvis and been on bed rest for 8 wks, so she didn't get as much exercise/playtime as normal. she spent a lot of time laying in bed snuggling with me. i just made a point of telling her "no" when she did it and shoving a toy under her nose and she stopped. i didn't make a big huge deal out of it, but just let her know there was a better alternative (toy). she never got sores. i hope you figure out what it is!!!
growing up my parent's dog was allergic to grass, so I agree with the others that it could be a grass allergy. Julie would eat her paw pads off, they had to keep her off the lawn completely, I would try washing her paws and talking to your vet who will probably say to try the benadryl.
Dogs have histamine receptors in their paws so it could very well be allergies. Washing his feet might solve the problem. If washing is not a complete solution, go talk to your vet about allergy meds. My sister's German Shepherd frequently has her feet washed because none of the allergy meds seemed to help (and we tried all of the over-the-counter drugs) but Zyrtec works well for my corgi. (He seems to have the same spring/summer seasonal allergies that I do--during the same periods, his skin turns bright pink and he itches while I sneeze.)
After a trip to the dog park Owain was licking his paw to the degree that his paw started bleeding. I washed him as best I could (he's a feisty one) and took him to the vet, expecting allergies. I was wrong. Apparently, small growths can form next to the paw pads; my vet called them "fronds" and explained that they are not cancerous. They can be as deep as the pad and become irritated since they have an almost "stalk-like" structure. This is why he was licking his paws--he must have gotten it caught on some nasty thing or another at the park. He was prescribed steroid cream and an antibiotic, and surgery was recommended.
Oh. Ick. How interesting (in a yucky sort of way). Sounds like the dog equivalent of something like plantar warts.

What was the outcome? Did you get the surgery to remove them or was the steroid/antibiotic combination effective?
