Possible UTI??

So today, Ginger had been peeing A LOT more than normal. Tonight, we noticed that the urine was very dark and we think there is blood in it. I'm thinking she has a UTI. She's being her normal, hyperactive, snarky, barky self, just peeing every 20-30 minutes. I'm going to call the vet tomorrow and see if I can get her in after work. I have some Clavamox left over from when she got fixed. Just curious what everyone thought about me giving her one before I took her to the vet. When I researched online everything pointed to the use of a penicilan based antibiotic as treatment.

Sorry Ginger is not feeling well. She definately has all the signs of UTI, unfortunately have had to deal with them more than once with my girls. I had one female that the vet kept putting her on antibiotics and it would come back just a week after the treatment so they put her on Clavamox for 30 days and it cleared her UTI and did not have any more problems. Had a different female with UTI a few months ago and they put her right on Clavamox for 2 weeks. I don't think it would hurt her any and it may make her a little more comfortable until you can get her to the vet.

Thanks Beth. That's kind of what I was thinking. I hate that I'll have to wait until after work to take her, but I haven't worked a full week of work in 4 weeks now, so I really can't take any time off! I think I will give her a Clavamox before bed tonight.

Here I go on my soapbox....how come you had antibiotics left over from her spaying? I hope it's because the vet told you to stop it!! A lot of people don't know this, but you have to give all of the antibiotics as prescribed until they are completely gone. Not doing this leaves over bacteria that isn't completely killed. These bacteria "learn" to avoid that antibiotic for the future, and this is how drug resistant bacteria form...ie: MRSA. I wouldn't give the Clavamox until you are seen by the vet. If he wants to do a culture, then the Clavamox will throw off the results and not give a valid reading.

When you do antibiotics, you need to give all of them. One antibiotic is not going to do anything because it isn't powerful enough to kill all the bacteria in one pill. See your vet, get a new antibiotic prescription, and then give the full dose as instructed. It's very important to do correctly or else, like Jennifer Markley said, the bacteria will become resistant to the drug and that drug won't work anymore. Then, not only will your dog be more difficult to treat, but the bug could spread and more people will have these difficult-to-treat bugs. Antibiotic resistance and superbugs are real things and they start with people giving antibiotics incorrectly and without proper medical consul.
