Puppy and loving discipline
I've had Corgis my whole life and that's a lot of years. Corgis are working dogs that need meaningful activity and discipline. The time to start training is when your baby Corgi comes home. Corgis are very smart and they will be a step ahead of you, if you let them. DON'T let them. They love to know the rules, work hard and be praised. The earlier you start lovingly training your puppy, the more rewards you will have later with your adult Corgi who listens for your command and happily performs it. A rescue dog needs the same training, but first needs to trust its new family. Knowing that your rescue is experiencing a hard transition will hopefully make you more patient and compassionate. Be loving and earn the trust of your rescue. But whether a puppy or a rescue, train your Corgi well and as early as you can. Every Corgi and owner thrive through combined work and effort.

It sure is fun to think about!! Vegas would not be relaxing, but it relaxes me just to think about. NC is beautiful but if we went there and my parents found out, I would have to go there (MD) that would be not so relaxing. I have not had an adventure for a long time, yes I like to think about it

I keep reminding myself of this. The hardest days are the rainy ones...cabin fever. We've had rain for the last 2 days. Rafa's been on time out several times yesterday and today. He's in his crate now and it's quiet. YES!

How do you put him in time out?!? A crate? Oh yeah, read the whole post Carol! We don't go in crates at our house - read below about Sonny. I don't know what it is about Lucky, but from night one his little legs came out and we could not get him into that crate! LOL, it was hysterical to see 2 adults trying to get our new rescue into a crate, our older corgi going into the crate as he loved crates. I think Lucky had this premonition that he would be spending many hours in a crate if he went into one at all, or maybe his former owners who dumped him in the snowbank misused the crate - don't know

How old is Rafa? My Lily is 6 months and even now he and Jimmy ( 5 years old ,Basset Hound) are not the best friends in the world. Sometimes Jimmy wishes this little power dog disappears for good =).

Rafa is 6 months, too. I'm sure Lucy wishes Rafa would disappear. Sounds like we have very similar situations, for better or worse. = )

That's so funny. What's your son's real name? I named Rafa for Rafael Nadal, the tennis player. I love the name Lily. Is she an energizer bunny like the 2 Rafas or a more laid back girl?

My Rafa ( the son...) is Rafael, and Lily is a puppy full of energy, she never, never stops! And poor Jimmy ( the Basset Hound) ....even if I buy two identical toys Lily has to have both of them in the same time! Jimmy just gave up...he doens't play anymore as he used to play.

that's the exact situation in my house. lucy was the happiest corgi until we got rafa. i have to wait til we put rafa in to sleep to get some one-on-one play time with lucy. she seems so miserable since we got him. she was the happiest corgi imaginable before we introduced rafa to the family. hope this is temporary and they become great friends.
good luck to you with lily and jimmy. have to hope that when lily and rafa are no longer puppies, they will be adult friends for life with jimmy and lucy!

We got Sonny about 18 months ago and he has been slow to be a real part of the family - eating a sleeping are his favorites! (you are lucky that Rafa is fitting in so soon!) Well, he has decided that he can come out and be a lap dog, all 40+ pounds of him!! He has always wanted attention if we were petting Lucky, then he would move in - he is such a moose that he just knocks poor Lucky over. He has never been a talker like our Lucky who has been a talker since he came to us - well, Sonny has decided to HOWL, just like a hound. Funniest thing I ever heard, if he just does it at the start of the cayotes or Jeremy coming up the drive, but...if he talks along with Lucky we are in trouble! They both started in when a woman rode by on a horse yesterday, and then there was the lady who came up the drive on her red golf cart! She thought we had a hound and was very surprised to see 2 corgis. But...they don't bark at the rabbits in the yard, just let them munch away
Still working on relearning with Lucky and learning with Sonny, the "stay" YIKES, how can a 9 yr old dog forget his teachings? He looks at me as if he were never trained to do anything! "you want me to do what? I can do whatever I want, I will just slither around and you cannot tell me what to do" Sonny, of course, was never trained and he just looks at you as if "just give me a treat and I will consider doing something, I don't know what I will do, but I will do something!" At least they are both past the chewing stage! Oh my, they have been out on their own for who knows how long, Sonny could have found a new way out of the yard!

What was Sonny's original home like? How lucky they are to have you. You're a saint. I feel like such a brat complaining about Rafa. My husband just came home. He greets Rafa with "how are you doing crazy dog?"
I had intended to start Rafa in obedience classes on Sat. but the classes were postponed for a week. If any puppy needs these classes it's Rafa. Even Lucy's behavior is slipping since Rafa. She could probably use a refresher course. Or, maybe she just wants life to be back the way it was before Rafa, or am I projecting? = )

Sonny came from what we originally thought was a normal loving home! They had reasons they could not take him with them when they moved to TX from OR, they had 3 girls about 7 to 12 yrs. The day he came to our house they tell us he does not eat kibble, only table scraps and that he had gotten on the dining table (he's a corgi!!) the night before and eaten an entire Costco cheesecake, so we might find he had diarrhea! Might? He supposedly loved his crate, he hated it! He had been in it when it had fallen off the belt thingy at the airport and he is scared to death of it (how they missed that I have no idea) He had never been trained one bit, and as near as I can tell those little girls and the parents never played with him! YIKES The poor thing runs from all toys. Still no toys, but he likes to run about the yard and last night tried to be a 40+# lap dog which is ok as i want him to fit in. He is just now deciding to be a part of the family for more than a while. The day he climbed up on the rocks to protect the yard I about croaked, and yesterday when he howled when the lady came up the drive I nearly dropped my teeth. Silly boy! Lucky still hasn't figured out how to take this large thing who know how to FRAP or play with him. However, like I said, we have no chewing - don't know how you are doing it Wendy - well yes I do! We adopted this cat who supposedly used one of those scratching posts, she has 2 count them 2, and has ruined both couches, and 4 chairs!!! Maybe Rafa could chase this otherwise very nice kitty and put her in her place!!
