As per request I am converting my blog into a discussion. I haven't done this before so I hope I'm doing this right, or at least it makes sense.

These past couple of weeks I noticed some strange habits/behaviors in Lola. The habits are mainly her waking me up at six o'clock every morning to her shaking uncontrollably. No matter what I do I can't seem to cease her shaking so the event will go on for a couple of hours. Worried that she was having seizures I posted a blog right away and contacted the vet to make an appointment.
I did make an appointment for the vet and have made two visits over there this week. The first visit we found that Lola's sugar was at the low point of normal, however; it could not be accurately tested since I had already fed her that morning and also was told that her liver levels had changed slightly. After a twelve hour fast and monitoring her every night we returned to the vet this morning (12/13/13), to retest her sugar. We found that it was pretty below average at 62 when the normal levels are between 80-120.
Reasons as to why her levels are dipping so low at night are still unknown but as instructed I am to divide Lola's meal portions into numerous small meals a day, as well as snacks throughout the day, a snack just before bed, as well as keeping corn syrup next to my bed to rub on her gums when/if she goes into an episode.
I myself did go through a spell of a mysterious illness that turned into five years of numerous doctors appointments a week, and seemingly endless amounts of tests. So I do know the ordeal that she could be going through and am willing to do what it takes to make sure she gets better and remains as comfortable as possible. Because of this I feel like she chose me for a reason.
I do fret for her health and safety, and although this is a difficult time for this to start, I'm ready and willing to do what it takes to get her healthy.

Went to the vets this morning! We were allowed to leave during the two hour wait and were also able to take Lola with us. We had a few errands to run so it worked out. The first blood drawing was easy and they got the vein on the first try but, the second one was more difficult and required a few pokes before they found it. She cried and hated being there so much!
For now all that's left is to wait for that phone call when the results come in!

Blood draws are tough with Corgis;  something about the structure of the leg.  The techs always look very sad when Maddie gets her blood tests; when she started having seizures they needed five tubes and they had to prick all four legs before finally getting enough.   Our vet techs assure us that basset hounds are even worse.

Keep us posted with results!

Finally got the results in from the lab! They said her levels were low normal but normal at least. He was wondering how Lola was doing and I informed him that her energy level was back up to what it used to be and her shaking was pretty much gone. He said that since she seemed better we could just keep up with the new diet and see how she does for awhile. Otherwise the next step would be to take an X-ray which would be about $105, or an ultrasound which we would have to travel a ways for and costs about $250. But she does seem fine now so we are gonna take a couple weeks to see how she does. But I'm so glad her liver is ok!

Thanks for sharing this saga. It's good to know about conditions like this. I'll be more careful than I have been about regulating Cassie's diet and being sure she has some small thing to eat before a long night in the sack or a long day with me out of the house.

Happy to hear that tests are normal and that the changes you made are doing the trick.  I would not do anything else beyond what you have already done, unless the problem re appears in spite of the changes you've made and I doubt that will happen.  Your situation was an unusual one, but every dog is an individual and, once you've checked, as you have, that there is no underlying problem, you can just adapt to her particular dietary needs.  If you needed fine tuning, rather than more tests, in your shoes I would first consider consulting a pet nutritionist such as this one:

Good job, this was an interesting case.
