Tucker has been fairly well behaved on our walks - he walks right next to me and even stops and waits nicely at the corners when I tell him wait.

All that goes out the window though when he sees a squirrel that he feels needs to be herded and chased! He acts like a nut and pulls towards it with all his might. I don't want him choking himself and I want to have better control of him in distracting situations like that.

He just LOOOVES squirrels and small furry animals My niece has a bunny and Tucker just sits by his cage thoroughlly licking him through the bars until the rabbit has enough. He also wants to groom the cats. What a weirdo!

Any suggestions for future squirrel sightings?

You could try to redirect with treats when you see a squirrel. If you can time it right it might work.
I am no help, but I had to respond. Bertie Wooster is so crazy for squirrels that he will even bite trees when no squirrels are around! Squirrels drive him completely insane... Last weekend, a young squirrel fell or jumped out of a tree and landed inches from Bertie's nose. Bertie jumped about three feet straight up into the air and did his tough guy bark -- while actually allowing the little squirrel a head start to the next tree over. Needless to say, the squirrel raced over and got up the tree with Bertie a few steps behind. I am convinced that Bertie came home from that walk with tales for his friends of the 10-foot, 100-lb squirrel that got away -- while in fact, he really really really didn't want to catch it at all. Dogs.

But I'm no help because I have never gotten Bertie to redirect from his squirrel obsession, and he's otherwise a pretty obedient (and VERY food-driven) dog. He needs a couple of minutes of reaction before I can even get any attention from him. What can I say, I'm a lousy trainer....
That is too funny. I think Tucker would react the same way.

He jumps at the bottom of the trees after they run up - and when they scamper across the wires over our back yard he runs back and forth underneath. Nothing gets him going like squirrels.
he he he, reminds me of "Up" the movie I just saw the other day :) (SQUIRREL!!!)

My dogs seems to prefer yummy treats over squirrels, may be give it a try?
Did you love Up? One my many middle-age changes is that I pretty much only want to see animated kid's films. Love that -- "Squirrel!" That's every other word out of Bertie's mouth! Sadly, squirrels totally trump treats.
Yes, Loved it! Remember to bring tissue.
lol. oh how funny how he even wants to lick the cats. ein on the other hand hates cats and always wants to chase them. ein does the same thing as tucker when it comes to squirrels. i try and sit him down and chill out when we see one but as soon as we begin walking he goes back to being a crazy dog.
