Superficial corneal Ulcer
I need some help/advice on Bubba's eye. three weeks ago he was diagnosed as having a "superficial corneal ulcer" in his right eye. I had taken him to the vet because the night before he was blinking and keeping it shut mostly and I didn't hesitate taking him in. this was on Saturday Aug 28th. that's when the diagnosis was made. He was put on an antibiotic oinment and Atropine at that pont.
The following Tuesday I had to take him back for a check up t see how things were going. Nothing had changed. I continued with the antibiotic salve and Atropine. We go back again on the following Saturday. This time they spin some of his blood and want me to put two drops in his eye from the serum 3-4 times a day along with the other two meds. Now, I'm going back to the vet once or twice a week for checks.
Yesterday they spun some more of his blood and gave me four vials from which to draw drops from and the regiment continued. this time they
didn't use that illuminated stuff(whatever it's called) to check to see
if the ulcer was still there as she didn't want to irritate the eye
more.
We're now going on the fourth week with this and I'm about nuts trying
to keep up with what I put in there last and in trying to get him to
open his eye, which is shut tight as Ft Knox. It's next to impossible to
get him to keep his eye open enough for me to put his meds in and I'm
about crazy trying.
I'm thinking seriously about stopping all this to see if things won't be better for him as well as for me. Continuing to put this Atropine, blood serum and antibiotic ointment in his eye every day, several times a day just doesn't seem to be working and I may be making things worse by continuing to do so. After three weeks if it's going to heal it should be so by now. Other measure seem to be in order and I thought about just stopping all this to see if there's an improvement.
I have no idea how this came about and I understand there's at least a dozen ways it could have happened from bacteria to scraping the eye on a twig. That doesn't matter. What matters is there was a pin head size ulcer on his lower cornea around 6 o'clock that as of the last time they checked was still there...no bigger but no smaller. Some advice would be greatly appreciated before I loose it all worrying about him.

Thanks, Jane. I figured I wasn't the only one that's experienced this with all the Corgis on this forum. I could deal with a lot of things but his sight worries me and the fact that it's close to impossible to get that stuff in his eye is frustrating. I suppose he's just trying to protect it.

We went throught this. The inital anibiotic eye ointment did not work so the vet changed and it healed just fine. I was very freaked out by the cloudy look...however, our vet made told us that was part of the healing process and would clear up when his eye healed. He knew what he was talking about my fellow is just fine. No long term issues. Good luck!!! ^,,^

This vet didn't give me another antibiotic ointment but I wish she had tried something else in light of the fact this one hasn't or seems it hasn't worked in three weeks. I know that cloudy look and it does freak you out for sure.
I found it odd this afternoon late that when we went on one of our few walks since this happened he had that bad eye 3/4 of the way open the whole time and when we got back to the yard, it was still open. The minute we got inside he shut it. Go figure that one.

Sounds promising...try hard to get those drops in and maybe she is healing...otherwise I also would ask to try a different kind!

I took him at 3:00 and didn't get out until about 4:30, came home and put some serum in his eyes and started supper. that little trip today cost $275. They changed his antibiotic to Tobramycin Opthal (5ml), gave me more eye serum, did a new exam, washed his eye out with saline solution did a Tonometry, bloodwork with CBC Panel to see if anything else was going on causing healing to slow and did the eye corneal stain to see how the ulcer looked. I won't know about the blood work until tomorrow and have to bring him back in next Monday.
The vet said sometimes another dogs serum would be more beneficial that his own but I didn't want to go that route and she was ok with that. His eye was swollen a bit and red. You could see with the stain and black light where the other vet had done the swab and grid scratch. It showed up ten times bigger than the original ulcer, which was about the size of a pin head. This vet said she didn't really want to fault them(the other vet) but said she wouldn't have done the grid scratch as early as they did. Even though she told me that, I think in her heart she thought differently.
I canceled the appointment tomorrow with the one that started all this as I was getting no where with them and he wasn't healing. Even the vet today at the Animal hospital told me this may take a while but that the area was still superficial and had not penetrated further but was "indolent", meaning mainly it's not healing as it should. She also indicated that it was unusual for Corgis to go this long but expected it from Pugs and French Bulldogs. This is really wearing on both Bubba and myself both emotionally and financially but his eye is precious and so is he so, you do what you have to do. My heat/ac unit crapping out and needing replacement hasn't helped a lot either and will have to replace it this Friday. I do accept donations.

I should have taken him there to begin with but the other place was much closer. Convenience doesn't always equal better treatment.

Seanna was just diagnosed with corneal dystrophy, which evidently can cause corneal ulcers....when the vet told us he said sometimes it's tied in with hypothyroidism. We know Seanna doesn't have that as we just had her tested for it a couple of months ago...whole other story there. Anyway, I know hypothyroidism will cause slow healing....just a thought? Maybe it's worth looking in to....

They did a lot of blood work today but, I won't know of the result until tomorrow. She didn't do a thyroid on him because she did one within the past year and there was no problem there. From what i was told today, some breeds are prone to get these ulcers more than others but Corgis are not among them so she was a bit stumped there unless he may have scratched it on a bush out back or picked up something in the grass rolling over like they love to do. It could have happened a dozen or more different ways-I'll never know.

I thought I'd gather a little more info before posting back. Last Friday a week ago today I had the guys out that put in my new heat/ac system and was surprise Bubba kept his eye open nearly all day. maybe the excitement of them being there was part of it but he didn't see much of them as they were either outside or int the garage. I was still pleased to see it open regardless the reason. Of course, some while after they left, he went back to closing it again.
That Sunday evening, I noticed he was coughing/hacking/sneezing in the evening. We went to bed and he woke me about an hour later coughing and reverse sneezing. I got up, got him some water and went back to bed. Shortly after that, he again woke me sneezing and coughing. I got up, brought him some ice cream and went back to bed again. Next thing I know, the alarm's going off (I get up at 4:30 am). I called the vet and took him over for them to check but the doctor was out with her own doctor's appointment and a substitute filled in for her and checked his heart and gave him some Benedryl. None of that helped.
today I took him in for his eye appointment and the vet also checked him out for his coughing and sneezing problem. As for the eye., she said it looked much better and wants me to continue the antibiotic and another medication she gave which amounted to Tear Drops with some sort of medication mixed in. No more serum. so, it looks like an improvement on his eye, thankfully.
She did two x-rays today to check out his lungs and said they looked good except the "bronchi" I think she called it, was a little abnormal. He didn't have kennel cough or pneumonia but a touch of basically bronchitis from what I understood. He also had a temp of 104.5. that went up since night before last as I checked it Wednesday evening and it was 101.4. Now he's on an antibiotic for that and she wants me to keep a log of his temp to see how the antibiotic is doing.
We've just had a great time these past 4-5 weeks and it's taking a toll on both of use. From a monetary standpoint, I've had to dip into my savings as every time I go to the vet it's $200+ with over a month of this plus close to six grand for the new heat/cool system. When this is all over make no mistake, I WILL be getting some health insurance for him...something I nearly did last year but didn't. Lessons learned.
I forgot to mention they also did two radiographs and a fluid therapy today. Of course they had to do another corneal eye stain to access how his eye had improved and that's the only way to do it. These little guys are worse than kids but, you have to love them and care for them just like you would a four year old. They deserve nothing less of us.

I talked with the vet Friday evening as she wanted me to call about Bubba's temperature. It had escalated to 104.8 while at the vet and that was the primary reason for the x-rays. Come to find out, he was the one that was actually causing his temp to go up by being so anxious and nervous-although with him you couldn't tell. I thought something was up since I had just recently checked it and it was normal. One tell-tale sign for me was his ears. The inside turned a darker pink than usual.
Once I got him home I checked the temp every hour on the hour. It steadily dropped to 103.8, 102.4 and finally 101.6 just by being home. It was self induced. The vet said she had never seen anything like it before but that she had seem dogs/cats temp go up one or two degrees at best but not like Bubba's. I nearly have to pull him from the back seat once he sits up and realizes where he is when we pull up to the vet. Just a plain case of anxiety.
