This is why I love my dog.....
Well, in all honesty there are A MILLION reasons why I love my dog, but this is just one of them. Yesterday our buildings were getting new gutters and the maintenance guys were all over the place. They were in and out of our backyards and front yards etc. Well I come home yesterday to find my back gate was left WIDE OPEN!!! Franklin was sitting looking out the gate contemplating his future when I came home and ran over very excited to see me. I get home later and know the gate had to have been open for several hours. If this situation would have occured when I still had Kirby I can promise you he would have been miles away by the time I came home. I am so proud of Franklin for knowing a fence is not to be crossed even with a wide opening! I've always said he would never leave the yard, but this has never actually been tested. Now I can know with certainty that my boy will keep himself safe. I still called and left a very upset message with my managers because so much could have gone wrong with this scenario. A couple of buildings over there is an incredibly aggressive dog, if that dog was out it could have easily gotten in my yard (or house with my dog door!) and caused some serious damage to my pets. There is also a busy street a few blocks over. They are continuing to work on the buildings today, I'm going to lock all the pets inside until I come home just in case. But man oh man I love my pup! Such a good boy!

Good job Franklin!
Hopefully they don't leave anyone else's gate open! I know that I've had a few dogs while growing up that would have been gone with the wind!
He's so well behaved! I hope that when I get my puppy (I don't have to worry about Ziggy running off because he's just too darn lazy haha) that I can train him as well as you have Franklin trained :) That's awesome!

Wow, Franklin is SO smart. And you are obviously a terrific trainer! I can guarantee that Ace would have bolted (although he's an apartment corg, and has no experience with being in a yard) for freedom. You have done such a good job with Franklin; he's an example to the rest of us. :-)

I was just talking about this with one of my co-workers. Franklin is just a doggie genius and is no reflection on me as a trainer. Like I told my friend, he uses his brains for good instead of evil so he is looking for ways to please instead of figuring out how to get around doing something. If it were Kirby he would have high-tailed it out of there, he was constantly looking for escape routes under the fences or gates. If Franklin had hands I'm certain he would have closed the gate himself bc he knew mom didn't want him or the kitties out of the yard lol

Well, I am a firm believer that our dogs are a reflection of ourselves (training-wise!) and I think you must be doing something right, even subconsciously! I only wish Ace shared this gene for wanting to good by me. That's definitely not the case with him! :-D

Good boy Franklin! We don't have a fenced yard, but inside we have a baby gate and Jack won't go through if we leave the gate open. Maddie, on the other hand, needs the barriers there. They are just different personalities. Jack is a more stubborn dog, and more likely to debate a request, but once he decides that a rule is a good rule, he will always follow it. Maddie is not so big on understanding rules, but will never argue with a request. So there is really no telling what they will do til you get to know them.
Glad nothing went wrong, and give Franklin some extra play time for being such a good boy!

My gate has been left open, and Snickers and Jack went out front, but stayed close. Still, I would rather they were as good as Franklin.

I really hope when I get a Corgi it's as well trained and willing to please as Franklin. I love it! He is such a doll, and such a smart boy. Good Job Franklin! (:

You have to start training a corgi young or they will have you trained! They are wonderful, adorable, funny, sweet, loving and can be VERY bossy. I wouldn't trade my Gertie for all the tea in China though. :0)

agreed! I think I have to give most of the credit to the breeder for turning out such wonderful puppies. She starts there training as soon as they hit the ground and has them fully potty trained, crate trained, and well socialized before going home around 9 weeks old. Its amazing how well-rounded and social he was when I got him. Made him a piece of cake to continue training. I found a picture of him at just 4 months old sitting off leash with me on the beach showing 100% focus. Such a great pup!
