Shayleigh has been very good at playing with her toys, but never destroying them. So the other day I bought her a new toy (which she doesn't need because she never chews up the old ones), and, sure enough, she manages to de-gut it in just a few days. Needless to say she had fallen in love with the toy and cried when I took its mangled corpse away. I put it up for a few days, waiting to see if there was any way I could fix it before the whining for it got to be too much for me. So this morning I got out my sewing kit and successfully completed my first toy "surgery" while Shayleigh looked on anxiously, thinking I was terribly mean for not letting her just have her toy. Anybody else ever have to perform "surgery" on a toy their dog literally loved to death?

WOW! A few days before a toy was de-gutted? That would be a record at my house...LOL! I've gotten to the point where I just let the de-gutted toy lay. Duncan would always tear the stuffing out of it again. So, after a while, if he shows no interest in the de-gutted toy, I toss it. What I have found out, it's the toy he loves to take and "kill" shake a lot. So, half of Duncan's toys are de-gutted and half aren't.
Yeah, I just clean up the stuffing and let him go at it. I could try and sew it up, but he would just rip at it again and make my house look like it snowed inside haha. He loves the toys and plays with them even without the stuffing.
I did so many toy surgeries in Penny's first year... she would just yank the stuffing out again. Interestingly, she has a stuffed bunny that I sewed up several times and just gave up on (it was her first toy - the breeder sent it home with us when we picked her up) but she loves loves loves the corpse. She always has 2 toys when she lays down - a chew toy and her woobie (the bunny corpse). She's a strange little thing.
I have tried, but I detest sewing. For awhile I got my dear departed Rusty stuffed toys from yard sales. Now that I have Chloe I did find a fleece type of toy that has NO stuffing, less mess for me, but it is still demolished within minutes. We name all her toys and even after they are looking really bad she'll play with them. I have liked the AKC stuffies, but cannot bring myself to pay $15.00 for something that would last 2 minutes. Glad that I am not the only mommy who tries to fix their toys,
I used to do both toy and bed surgery (Bertie apparently only likes beds with holes in them), but he was just too fast for me, so I had to give up. One day I paid the clerk in our little town dog shop for a toy, and gave it to Bertie to carry to the car, and he had the seam ripped before he got to the door (leaving little trails of white stuffing between the counter and the store's door). The clerk thought it was hilarious and gave us a new one, but jeeze! My new, non-sewing method is to send the mangled corpses back to the manufacturer with a note, "Thought you said it was indestructible?" Sometimes we get new ones, sometimes we don't....
HAHA! Sending them back! Good for you! Nice to know that at least sometimes they stand by their product.
Every toy we have ever had is degutted within a day or two. Our sheltie has set a record of 2 hours before. He seems to find the toys weakest point and chew until he rips a hole - once that happens its all over for the toy. Charlie wont play with a new toy. He is afraid of all new toys and especially any squeaky toy. Absolutely no squeaky toys can come into the house without him hiding until it has been properly de-gutted and de-squeaked! Our rescue corgi, Scoots, isn't afraid of anything and joins in the killing of the toys with gusto!
