What do I specify in my will when leaving $ for my Corgis care?

I have seen a discussion on this before but am ready to set aside a chunk to assure my Corgis have a good life if I don't outlive them. Does anyone have any thoughts? I will leave them $ for basic medical expenses, yearly shots and any ideas what else? I have people willing to manage this for me so I want to make sure they get what they need.

I don't have any idea how to do this, but I want you to know that I would help take care of them. I know in mine, I just specifically put who was to take care of them. I would just imagine calculating basic care: food, vaccinations, and maybe an extra $1500 per year in case something drastic happened? I just did one basic one though--if you're really serious then I'd meet with a lawyer to make sure it's drawn up right.

Thanx Jennifer...I will double check and see if I still have you on my regular email and if I have your phone #. I just want to make sure my guys are well taken care of. I know my neice(who would be in charge) would most likely take Sage and some others that would "help" but I figure my situation would overwhelming to most so I should have a "plan" in place. I don't think I need a lawyer as we are going to meet sometime and set up what I would want. I will just put her on my life insurance policy through work and she would just get that amount.

If you have a vet you generally use ask them about if they can have money put onto your account. The old vet I used to work at would have either a credit card on file or a certain amount of money placed onto their account for pet care. One of our clients put aside a large sum of money for her cat and we (the vet) went through a lawyer to draw funds when needed for the care of the cat. Just make sure you specify who gets the money. We had a very shady person working at my past vet and she was taking care of the cat when the owner passed away and basically stole money from the owner saying it was going towards the cat's care, when in fact a technician at work took the cat (as previously arranged) and she didn't get a penny for his very expensive medical conditions because she was not listed as getting the money in the will. I know when I left that vet there was a big fight going on between the shady employee (who was fired over this when the practice owner found out) and the technician who took the cat and the lawyer was in the middle not knowing what to think since it wasn't clearly stated in the will.

Thanks Melissa, my neice would have my vets name and be in charge of the $$$. None would go to the person getting the dog unless the had a receipt for services or she paid the vet directly (if needed) before the vet was to do the work. She's a stickler for $$$ and manages it very well.

I have known people to set up a trust fund to take care of their pets after they pass away. Maybe you should talk to a lawyer about it...

If your local corgi rescue group is reliable you might arrange something with them so they would be the contact point if something happened to you. They'd be in the best position to find a suitable home for your pals and knowing that there were funds set aside for care would make that even easier.

I had a conversation with our local rescue about setting up a "pet assurance plan." In essence, for a small donation to the rescue they would keep a file on the dogs and make sure they got to the best possible home should that ever be necessary.
