I was wondering how everyone made their decision to own a Corgi. There are 1000's of breeds out there, yet why the Corgi? I choose to get a Corgi because I was looking for a high energy dog that was smallish, yet didn't have the intellect of a poodle (no offense to poodle's or their owners) My parents have an amazingly smart border collie, so I was looking for a dog that would be more or less from the same genre. My dad introduced me to some of his client's Corgi's and always boosted how smart they were, even when they were pups! So that's what sold me, that and those ears are adorable!

What about everyone else?

I had been wanting to get a dog after buying my house in town but did not know what kind to get. I am a huge fan of Border Collies (smart and beautiful) but knew that my yard would not be a good environment for one. I met a Corgi at a friends house and then another at my hairdressers, I was impressed by their good looks and intelligence. Most of my friends suggested small dogs like mini doxies and poodles for me. Well I heard a radio add for a puppy and thought what I was going to see was a mini doxie pup. When I got to the house the pup was a Corgi. My mistake as I heard the add wrong, not the deception of the breeder. One look at little Leo and I fell for him. I did think it over for about 5 hours then went back to buy him. I have never been sorry. Leo is just the best little guy ever and has really given my life a boost of happiness and challenge. When I heard from the breeder earlier this year that her pair were expecting again, I just had to have another great Corgi, that is why I am getting Randy.
I got my first corgi after our family daschund passed after getting ahold of a bufo frog 5 years ago. A week later I saw this funny faced guy at a local pet store and HAD to have him. I waited 3 days to make sure it wasn't an impulse. Told myself if he was there when I went back, it was meant to be. And lo-and-behold his silly face was still there. 4 and a half years later, we've got our second from the Sunshine Corgi Rescue. Since my husband met my little guy, he loves the breed. Who couldn't?! Their silly smiles (tongue lolling out the side of their head), their froggy butts, and as everyone has mentioned their tushie swagger. Plus the ears are excellent! So now we are a multiple corgi household. :)
There is just something about the way they look that has always attracted me. I am a huge cat person, but my family have always wanted a dog. For some unexplained reason and after watching numerous Me or the Dog shows, I came around to the idea. We have done a lot of research on the breed and corgis seem like a good fit. Little We-can't-agree-on-a-name-yet comes in mid May. He's the darker one at the bottom right of the pic. Corgilicious (my new expression - thanks Nicola)!
Cute puppies! I love cats too and find the corgis to be very cat-like.
I saw a Corgi when I was little and loved the way they look (both Pems and Cardis). My family had some great dogs including our Australian Shepherd who really made me love the intelligence and devotion of the herding breeds. When I met my husband, his family had a Pembroke who was always the life of the party. When we started talking about getting a dog, it was a no brainer what kind we would get, we just had to decide whether we wanted a Pem or Cardi. We went with the Cardi because we love the way they look, the colors they come in and their personality and we're so happy with our choice. A Corgi has all the best qualities of a dog, cute, smart, devoted, good at guarding, playfull, not too big and not too small, great temperment etc. The only drawback is the shedding. :) We'll probably always have at least one Corgi in our home.
When I was a kid I had a fairy tale book that my mother read to me from. My favorite story was of one about the fairys and the pictures had the cutest pictures of fairys with their dogs. I loved those pictures and when I got older I was watching a Westminster show where the Corgi won. There was the dog of my childhood fairy tale book. I bought one a couple weeks later and named her Phoebe Bell and she was the love of my life. When I got a divorce my ex husband decided to get rid of her without me knowing. He gave her to some breeder close to the area. I tried to get her back but she would not let me have her. It broke my heart. So after I remarried I told my new husband how much I loved Phoebe and would love to get another Corgi because they are the best. One day a couple of months later he called me up while he was at work and told me to call this number and talk to a man named Mr. Krueger which is one of his managers at work. I thought he had done something wrong because he is quite the character. Well when I called the number and told the man who I was he told me I got to choose the first pup out of his litter of Corgis. I was so excited I started crying. I fell in love with my hubby all over again that day......and that is how I got Maggie Mae. Life is so sweet and I am so blessed!!
OMG - Your first husband must have been a real jerk. Good that you got a kind and thoughtful man the second time around. Maggie Mae is a gorgeous dog.
Yes, indeed -- both the ex hub and that nasty breeder sound awful! Such a sad tale, but your Maggie Mae (and your current hubby) sound wonderful.
That is so sweet! I nearly cried reading this. What a keeper your hubby is!
When I was a little girl, I used to spend August at my grandparent's house on Fire Island (no cars, just boardwalks and bikes and wagons). Their house was on the bay, and someone (I never knew who, exactly) down the boardwalk had a Corgi. He would wander up the boardwalk visiting all the neighbors, then wander home. Forty years later, living alone in NY, I decided it was time to get a dog, and the image of that jaunty little guy with the bunny butt sprang into my head -- the right-sized dog for an apartment, and yet still not a "small" dog. So I looked them up online, and the pictures and descriptions were enough for me.... Funny thing is, my cousins just gave me a watercolor painting of the view from my grandparent's porch, and I realized, it's exactly the same view from which I first saw that little Corgi! I keep thinking I should paint him in....
We choose corgis years ago Jack our first because he needed a home away from the Az humane Society. Yes they treated him very well but its not a proper home. Gwenie because we knew just how smart and well behaved corgis are. That being said Gwenie is a talker, climbs anything she can and has chewed up a few things. I don't care that she has done these things she is puppy. She has gotten so she doesn't chew on things other than her toys. I love that she is a talker, Jack wasn't he was just an old man even when young. Corgis are fun and keep you on your toes. Besides who wants a dumb dog, she is smart and has even conned her Daddy into letting her sleep in our bed! OK as you can see I am a corgi lover, I grew up on RAF bases in the UK and saw alot of them too and was so pleased when we got one. This is a good question thanks! Kitty and Gwenie
My husband saw one before I ever knew what they were a long time ago and always told me that's what kind of dog he wanted. I did a lot of research on them before giving in to what he wanted. I wanted a dog that was playful, friendly to other people and animals, and most importantly good with kids since being a young married woman, I would like to have children in the near future. I also wanted something that wasn't too big in size, I didn't want something that could walk me, and something that could be easily trained.

Ah, and how can you say no to those big ears and little bunny butt!
